Bob Jones takes a doubleheader from Smiths Station in a highly anticipated early season matchup.

Game 1:

The first game of the doubleheader was scoreless through three innings as starting pitchers from both sides were very impressive. Smiths Station sent senior Carson Swilling to the mound and he went 3 2/3 innings allowing 2 earned runs. Swilling allowed 4 hits, issued 2 walks and had 9 punchouts. He was relieved with 2 outs in the third with 2 men on by Seth McConnell and he worked 1/3 of an inning allowing two earned runs. Swilling was responsible for the 2 men on base when McConnell entered the game. Gavin Blair threw the final 2 innings for the Panthers, allowing 3 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 3 Patriot hitters. Bob Jones started junior Thomas Ballard on the mound, and he went 5 innings allowing 4 hits and striking out 8 with no walks. Senior Sam Maynard threw the last 2 innings and allowed 1 hit while issuing 1 walk and 1 strikeout. The scoring got started in the bottom of the 3rd with back to back homeruns as Caden Rose launched a 3 run homer and was followed by Cam Hill’s solo shot to give the Patriots a 4-0 lead. The score stayed that way until the bottom of the 6th as the Patriots added two solo homers. Junior Max Soliz, Jr hammered a ball over the fence in left and sophomore JW Hopkins was called on to pinch hit and promptly deposited a hanging breaking ball over the fence in left as well to provide the final run of the game as Bob Jones won 6-0.

Before the 9th inning, all the scoring happened in the 2nd inning as Smiths Station jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Hodgdon singled and later came around to score on a groundout off the bat of Clayton Freeman. Bob Jones would answer in their half of the 2nd inning as Slate Alford singled to start the inning and later scored on a bases loaded walk. Much of the rest of the game was dominated by pitchers from both sides. The game was tied 1-1 headed to extras as Bob Jones would win it in their half of the 9th inning. Alford tripled to start the inning. After a pop up on the infield and 2 intentional walks, Marrero got a big strikeout for the 2nd out of the inning.
