Joey's Uncommitted '23 Summer Standouts

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - As we start heading into our fall season of events, I wanted to reflect on all the great baseball I saw this past summer. What I found in that reflection was a ton of great uncommitted players so below I highlighted a team of uncommitted ‘23s that stood out to me with their performance. Events where I got to see these standout players included the PBR California ProCase, Top Prospects ID, BAWS 2021, Rising Stars Games ID, California State Games, PBR Future Games, PBR West Coast Games, and Dude Day.

Outfield:

'23 OF Will Gasparino - Harvard Westlake: Probably the player I am most excited about in the ‘23 class. Got to see him a a lot during the 2021 HS season and he showed notable improvement in the summer especially in the power department. Like the way the hands work in the swing and has some advanced bat speed for his age. Also a 6.77 runner at 6-5, 190 pounds. Don't think he'll stay uncommitted for much longer.

'23 OF Ryan Limerick - Notre Dame HS: Standout from Dude Day. Athletic build that is continuing to grow and fill out. Liked what I saw from him before the 2021 HS season and has shown improvement since. Swing is quick compact that produced plenty of line drives both BP and in game. Solid actions in the OF as well. Will get his chance in the OF next year for Notre Dame and wouldn’t be surprised if he had a breakout year.

'23 OF Devon Eskridge - Arcadia HS: Highly projectable body at 6-3, 190 pounds. Showed well at both West Coast Games and Dude Day. Minimal body movement in his swing and lets his strong hands play. Power is present already with more in the tank. Can also get it done in the OF. A name I would keep an eye on.

Infield:

‘23 SS Eric Jeon - La Mirada HS: Was a standout at both the Top Prospects ID in July and DudeDay in August. Is solid on both sides of the ball. Quick hands at the plate. Present pull-side pop with some natural loft and has feel for the opposite field. Actions are smooth and easy at both SS/3B and can get it across the diamond in a hurry. Can’t think of a better uncommitted ‘23 infielder.

‘23 2B Kai Caranto - Harvard Westlake: After coming off an injury that set him back during the end of the 2021 season it was good to see him perform well at Dude Day. Real accurate barrel with some adjustability in the swing as well. The glove has always been solid and can play SS if needed too without problem. Consistent standout player every chance I get to see him.

‘23 3B Casey Borba - OLU: Was a consistent performer at every OLU game I went to towards the end of the HS season and showed well at Future Games. Swing and approach are advanced for his age. Sprays line drives to all fields against high-quality pitching with power continuing to develop. The glove is solid in all facets. Real high baseball IQ as well. A safe bet for any college program.

‘23 1B Jarret Segura - Alemany HS: A standout at Top Prospects in July and probably California’s West Coast Games MVP in August. Projectable body at 6-3 190 pounds. Simple and smooth swing that finds the barrel with power starting to show. Also the best defensive 1B I saw this summer picking everything in his range.

‘23 C Brady Francisco - Thousand Oaks: Liked what I saw from him back in March and January of this year and has made considerable strides forward since. Saw him at Dude Day where he hit well and showed the best catching skillset there. The swing is rhythmic and his hands work on a good path. He's going to get an everyday chance at TO now that Saum has graduated.

Pitchers:

‘23 RHP Brodie Purcell - JSerra HS: First time I saw him was fall of the last year and the growth on the mound that has taken place since then has been immense. FB now sits in the high 80’s with some considerable hop (21 inch avg VB). CB is an advanced secondary with above average movement characteristics. Moves down the mound well and the arm action is clean and quick. Gonna be an important arm for JSerra next season.

‘23 RHP Nick Dunlop - Torrey Pines HS: Only got to see him once at our PBR California Top Prospects ID but was easily one of the top arms there. Sat 87-89 with the fastball that he put wherever he wanted. Slider is a well developed secondary where he showed the ability to consistently throw it for strikes. Has present arm speed and gets good extension out front that increases perceived velo.

‘23 LHP Collin Adams - Thousand Oaks HS: Had the best pitching performance for team California at the inaugural West Coast Games in Vegas. Threw four shutout innings on just 46 pitches. He doesn’t blow you away with the radar gun but he has the pitchability. Attacked low in the zone and the FB/CH combo worked well off each other. As he starts to mature and the velo starts ticking up, he’s gonna become a highly sought out LHP.

‘23 RHP Lucas Dixon - Saint Francis HS: Dixon was a pleasant surprise at DudeDay. Had one of the better outings there where he showed a mid to high 80s FB that jumped out the hand and a sharp breaking ball that proved hard to square up. Mechanics/arm action were clean with easy effort. Solid first impression and excited to see him throw again.

‘23 UTL Bryce Dean - Santiago HS: Dean was a standout at the PBR Future Games back in July. On the mound is where he showed the most upside. Sat high 80s with the FB with solid breaking stuff that showed aptitude for spin on both pitches. Was also one of the better defensive SS’s of the group showing advanced feet and soft hands. Decent compact swing at the plate as well.
