New Episode LIVE now! At The Yard Podcast

The SoCal Underclass Games once again showed itself to be a big event for players to get a final showing against some quality competition before shifting their focus completely on high school ball.

Players gathered at Hart Park in Orange, California for a workout and a simulated game where they were evaluated by our staff with use of PBR's partnered technologies.

After a Pro-Style workout players were split into teams for a sim game where pitchers threw two innings of five batters per inning. There was some precipitation to contend with early, but players quickly adjusted and made the best of the temporary rain.

While there was plenty of offense and pitching, the players below showed well overall and fared deserving of mention in another issue of Quick Hits.

Scouting Report

A line drive machine during BP, there’s real strength in the frame and still room for more. 96 max EV w/avg. bat speed of 75 mph and hand speed at 20 mph. Gets the barrel through the zone easily and on plane. Put together two really quality at-bats in-game and showed a lot of effort in beating out an infield single. Athletic outfielder who played very well at 1B also. Arm strength is good for grade with good actions on the grass.

After a strong showing the CA State Games, McKenzie once again flashed his athleticism, baseball knowledge, and instinctive play last weekend. At 5-7 155, McKenzie packs a big punch (88 max EV) with electric hands (22.6 mph) and seeming does everything fast. A couple of quality at-bats with nothing to show for it in-game.

Cruised on the mound through his 10 batters faced, earning four strikeouts, all swinging, three of them on the curveball. Plenty of whiffs on all pitches while allowing on base hit and a walk. CB was virtually unhittable. Showcased well in the outfield in-game while a formidable LH swing at the plate that included a fly out to the deepest part of the park.

Bear Calvo

Class of 2027 / SS

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2027
  • Primary Position: SS
    Secondary Position: RHP
  • High School: La Mirada
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: EAST COBB ASTROS/ MVP HUSTLE
  • Height: 6-0
    Weight: 175lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R

Scouting Report

Physical body and tools. Touched 86 on the mound in his clean two innings. RCF approach may hinder EV’s, but make no mistake there’s pop to that and the pull side. Finished the game with two triples, both the other way and getting behind the left fielder. On the mound the delivery is relatively clean without much effort with some projection in terms of velocity gains. It's hard to tell where he'll end up, on the mound or as a hitter/position player, but one thing is for certain, he's going to continue the trend at La Mirada of high end two-way players.

William Cowles

Class of 2027 / C

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2027
  • Primary Position: C
    Secondary Position: 3B
  • High School: Notre Dame
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: MVP Hustle Longball
  • Height: 6-1
    Weight: 175lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R

Scouting Report

Catcher/3B who appears to just be scratching the surface. 3B defense was cleaner during the workout but in-game it was his pitch calling from catcher that stood out. Worked hitters into pitchers counts with his pitch calling and pitcher execution. Pops were 2.04, 2.07, 2.11, 2.19. The bat flashed raw power during BP and in-game. Favoring the pullside, the power potential is real as he showed on a one bounce ground rule double, his second double of the game.

Dolan Maher

Class of 2026 / C

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2026
  • Primary Position: C

  • High School: Torrey Pines
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: Five Star Mafia West
  • Height: 5-11
    Weight: 180lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R

Scouting Report

Maher has been in the weight room and it shows, particularly in the lower half. The added strength and agility is paying off in spades behind the plate where he flashes more athleticism in getting out of the crouch and balls in the dirt. Moves more freely. More consistent barrels and hard hit balls off the bat where in game he had multiple hits. Better use of the whole field during BP.

Austin Olness

Class of 2027 / 3B

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2027
  • Primary Position: 3B
    Secondary Position: RHP
  • High School: Mira Costa
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: GBG National
  • Height: 6-1
    Weight: 185lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R

Scouting Report

Another two-way guy who appears to be scratching the surface of this abilities. While the velocity isn’t what it will be, he shows uncanny command of three pitches that he continuously landed for strikes. Big and strong at 6-1 175, Olness showed the greatest upside at the plate and on the dirt at 3B. Blast Motion data is all above average with EV’s consistently in the mid-80’s. Way too early to tell where Olness ends up in the future, but he should provide quality two-way depth at Mira Costa.

Nyte Teeter

Class of 2026 / C

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2026
  • Primary Position: C
    Secondary Position: RHP
  • High School: Tustin
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: Next Level
  • Height: 6-1
    Weight: 160lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R

Scouting Report

Teeter continues down the development path as you’d like to see. First with his strength gains (up to 90 mph EV), and second with the athletic tools behind the plate where he’s a vocal leader. Much looser and reactive behind the plate. Pops were 2.01, 2.07, 2.15, 2.19. Showing growth on the mound with consistency and shape development of the secondary pitches. Velocity should come for Teeter who will compete for one of the starter roles for Tustin HS.
