Unsigned Senior Games: Scouting Reports - Pitchers

PBR CA Scouting Staff

New Episode LIVE now! At The Yard Podcast

ORANGE, CALIF. - The annual Unsigned Senior Games returned to Hart Park in Orange providing upwards of 50 seniors an opportunity to update metrics and showcase their abilities in a workout and gameplay format event. The event annually draws some of the top uncommitted players and the 2021 rendition was no different.

With COVID still impacting many college rosters, perhaps no class has been affected like the 2022 class. Needless to say there are many, many talented players in the class that remain uncommitted and several of them came to the Unsigned Senior Games to show and prove they are worthy of an opportunity at the next level.

As customary to most PBR California events, scouting reports complete the post-event content rollout. TrackMan and Blast Motion provide necessary data needed to analyze and understand player capabilities but the written eye test remains undefeated and an integral part in scouting. Today we take a look at pitchers.

Arm Action: LH. Slinging arm action, low 3/4 and submarine flashed, effective release point. Very effective against RHH. Consistency will be key to future command and success.
FB: T74, 71-73 mph. Fastball shows life and some hop, looked the best up and in to RHH, development to the other side of the plate will be key. Submarine fastball was effective when controlled, another option to make RHH uncomfortable in the box.
SL: 60-63 mph. Slider spin and release plays off the fastball well, swing and miss potential now and in the future, got RHH to flinch. Did not face a LHH.
CH: Flashed a changeup, could really help his arsenal with potential fading action, key pitch to facing LHH.

Neil Elias, Canyon Crest Academy  (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-4, 190-pounds. Lean athletic with long limbs. Lower half strength. Projectable starter's build.

FB: T84, 81-83 mph. Pounded the zone with the FB (67% zone percentage). Worked to all quadrants but played well up. Above average spin for velo at around 2200rpm. 7.5ft extension gives it some extra perceived velo.
SL: 74-76 mph. Sweeping action with average VB at 1 inch and HB average of 9 inches. Harder breaking slider keeping the same armspeed. Created whiffs and weak contact both in the zone and outside the zone. Well developed secondary.

Devin Fernandez, La Serna (CA), 2022

Arm Action: LH. Average arm action, medium arm swing, high 3/4 arm slot, lands square with alignment.
FB: T78, 76-78 mph. Commanded the fastball throughout the zone but struggled in his second inning. Worked up in the zone which was effective countering with off-speed but risky with potential juicy contact.
SL: 64-66 mph. Cutter by design, TrackMan shows curve action, tight break helps tunnel the pitch well off the fastball, ground ball inducer.
CH: 64-66 mph. Played well off the fastball, inconsistent TrackMan results show cut at times and run at times; most importantly its sinks and fades. Developing pitch that will be key to future success.

Garon Maxon, Notre Dame (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: LHP/OF
Body: 5-11, 160-pounds. Proportional build, some present strength with room for more, two-way look and feel.
Delivery: Compact start, bends back leg, point and fire upper body action, balance and timing are key, lands in an athletic position.
Arm Action: RH. Short arm swing, ball to ear action, hides the ball helping play up velocity, arm works off the same path on offspeed pitches.
FB: T79, 78-79 mph. Fastball worked best in to RHH; mainly from his balance and arm speed ability. Commanding the pitch to both sides of the plate key to future success. Can go up and down now.
CB: 69-71 mph. Inconsistent, caught the plate at times making it difficult to hit, changes front side to try and make pitch break creating opposite effect - stick with the fastball mechanics on pitch.
CH: 68-69 mph. Changeup showed well, faded away and down to RHH and garnered swings and misses, plays up with his ability to hide pitches and short angle, pitch should be used more with RHH.

FB: T76, 73-76 mph. Fastball got outs, located well to both sides of the plate, confidence in pitch. Lower arm angle could be something to consider.
CB: 65-66 mph. Swing and miss pitch, RHH very uncomfortable in the box, working backwards not out of the question.
SL: 64-66 mph. Similar to the curveball but with more speed, catches corners, and is efficient working off fastball.

Mikel Musich, Vista Murrieta (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: LHP/1B
Body: 6-0, 195-pounds. Mature build, pitchers feel, long limbed, room for muscle gains.
Delivery: Simple delivery, smooth leg and arm, limited whip and speed throughout. Balanced head and lower body, arm side opens at times enabling ball to be left up in the zone.
Arm Action: RH. High 3/4 arm slot, repeatable release points, limited arm speed, follow through in front key to overall arm action.
FB: T70, 68-70 mph. Fastball dominate, lots of confidence in the pitch, able to locate throughout the zone, hurt when left up in the zone.
CB: 58-59 mph. Showed three curveballs, slow velocity, developing pitch, curveball will be key to success on the mound.
CH: 64-65 mph. Showed one changeup, average speed differential, some fade and sink, another pitch that can only help overall repertoire.

Delivery: Balanced, 90 degree leg lift, keeps body inlined with home plate, front side staying closed key to overall mechanics.
Arm Action: RH. Medium arm swing, some pause in the back, elbow and arch back create torque, good speed in the front.
FB: T82, 79-81 mph. Heavy movement on pitches - both horizontal and vertical above-average readings on both pitches. Swing and miss fastball.
CB: 69-70 mph. Mixed in the curveball well, traditional break and speed, ability to locate back foot key to swing and miss development.
CH: 76-78 mph. Decent separation on the movement and spin from fastball, good feel and command, reliable pitch.

SL: 64-67 mph. Slurvy action. Present depth. Feel for it in the zone (55.6% zone percentage). Created weak contact. Consistent slot and armspeed as the FB allows it to be hidden well.

Caden Stillwell, Thousand Oaks (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: 3B/OF
Body: 5-11, 179-pounds. Proportional build, two-way player look and feel, baseball IQ.
Delivery: Relaxed delivery, two different arm angles used interchangeably, attacked hitters, balanced throughout, lands in a good fielding position.
Arm Action: RH. Two different arm angles highlights his arm action, attacks with fastballs and breaking balls effectively. Speed differential between arm angle pitches erratic; could benefit greatly from speed differentials in fastball. Specialty pitcher potential at the next level.
FB: T81, 79-81 mph. Movement and spin change with arm angle, effective pitches throughout the zone, should be seen as two different pitches.
CB: 69-73 mph. Arm angle creates a curveball and a slider, low 3/4 angle slider more effective vs RHH and high 3/4 curveball more effective vs LHH. Command and consistency of both pitches key to future success.

Positional Profile: 2B/RHP
