Q&A with Preseason All-State Participant: Landen Gomez

By Jeff Markle
Assistant State Director

As the season rolls on, Prep Baseball Report Colorado will continue to bring you an inside look into several of the players who attended the Preseason All-State event.  Continuing our look is No. 77 2016 Landen Gomez, 6-foot-1, 165 pound, RHP/2B from Roosevelt High School.

PBR:  Describe yourself as a baseball player to those who have never seen you play:

Gomez:  As a pitcher on the mound you have to be aware of everything that’s going on.   Whether there’s a base runner on or not you have to always be thinking. I do that very well by staying focused. I recognize the batters that come up, so the next time I face them I know what pitch to throw and what that particular batter did the last at bat.  Defensively, I have above average footwork that allows me to get in position quickly.  Offensively, I produce runs in the 4th or 5th spot of the line up with a patient approach at the plate.

PBR:  What would be your dream school to play baseball at?  If you have already committed to play at the next level, why did you choose that particular school?

Gomez:  My dream school would be the University of Texas. That being said, any school that gives me the opportunity to play collegiate level baseball would be great.

PBR:  What are your best assets on and off the field at this point in your high school career?

Gomez:  My best assets would be my ability to manage my nerves.  Whether I’m on the mound with bases loaded or at the plate with two strikes I stay focused and relaxed similar when taking tests at school.

PBR:  What is the best baseball advice you have received and try to follow to this point in your career?

Gomez:  Ex-Colorado Rockies pitcher, Jason Hirsh, told me to “just play within yourself and you will be just fine.”  I don’t let the moment get too big and only do what I can do while maintaining a competitive edge.

PBR:  What are your superstitions or routines that go on during a season?

Gomez:  Every time I go up to bat I always have to have some gum in the right side of my mouth and I always warm up with J-bands before any game.

PBR:  What are your goals for:

This Season:  To help my team win by being a dominant pitcher and batter.  I’m working on improving my strike percentage and on base percentage.

Two Years:  Playing collegiate level baseball and continuing to develop my game.

Four Years:  I would love a chance to play in the big leagues, but if that doesn’t happen I will have finished college with a degree in Criminal Justice.
