The 3A State Championship game has continued to give us some of the most exciting games since Prep Baseball Report has come to Maryland. Last year, a wild four run seventh inning got Huntingtown the championship. The year before last it was an epic pitching performance combined with a last inning walk off as Chopticon took the 3A crown before they moved up to 4A. This year once again we were not disappointed.

The Poolesville Falcons struck scoring the games first four runs and then were able to fend off a late Chesapeake Cougar rally to claim the 2017 3A State Championship with a 4-3 victory.

Poolesville was able to get going early in the contest after a leadoff walk to OF Colin Metz and then a double down the right field line off the bat of Poolesville starting pitcher Cole Carmack to put runners on second and third. After a strikeout, Poolesville clean up hitter Brady Pearre singled to left field, knocking in both runners and giving the Falcons an early 2-0 lead.

The lead would hold for the Falcons as Carmack was able to keep the Chesapeake offense from crossing the plate through four innings. Chesapeake had opportunities, loading the bases in the second and fourth innings, but Carmack would prevent them from scoring. Chesapeake left nine runners on bases through the first four innings.

Poolesville was able to extend their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Metz came up with a key two-out double to right center, scoring Matt Convers and Michael Morgan to make the score 4-0.

Chesapeake would finally get on the board in the top of the fifth inning after the first two hitters reached base. Tommy McNamara came up with the key hit a single to left field to drive in a run. Blake Rebstock, running to third on the hit, was able to score after the an over throw attempting to get him out. A wild pitch would caus eth ethird run to score but no more for Chesapeake.

Cooper Myers came in relief of Carmack in that fifth inning and was able to get out of the jam and then pitched a perfect sixth inning for Poolesville. He would let two runners get on base in the Chesapeake seventh inning, but left them both on after a ground out ended the game and commenced the pile.

Pearre, who might have been the best player the entire state tournament, led the Falcon offense going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two stolen bases. Carmack, Metz, and Morgan had the remaining hits for the Falcons.

Mike Cybert, Joe Seidler, and McNamara led the Chesapeake attack with two hits apiece while McNamara added an RBI.

The Championship was the first in school history for the Falcons in their second appearance in the state tournament after a semifinal appearance in 2014.
