Let's take a look into the 1A…

2023 Recap

Last year saw Clear Spring and Colonel Richardson lock horns in the state championship game, as the Blazers from Clear Spring were looking to win their second consecutive title. In a back-and-forth affair, Clear Spring's junior two-way standout Dawson Kehr (East Carolina) hit a walk-off solo homerun in the 11th inning to cap off an amazing two-year stretch for the Blazers, as they took the game 3-2.

2024 sees some shakeup in the regions, as the MPSSAA has moved a plethora of teams' classifications throughout the state. The most notable mover that impacts the 1A specifically sees one of the top programs in Carroll County, Libery slide into the 1A North. Below you will find information for each team in each region, including the top 4 teams that we see leading the charge throughout the season. March 21st kickstarts the regular season across the MPSSAA, and we wish the best of luck to all teams across the Old Line State.

Region Breakdowns

1A West

Region I Region II
Allegany Brunswick
Fort Hill Catoctin
Mountain Ridge Boonsboro
Northern Garrett Clear Spring
Southern Garrett Hancock
Smithsburg

Notes

2023 saw Northern Garrett defeat Allegany in the Region Championship, and we see Allegany vying for retribution this spring. The Campers lose senior two-way talent Griffin Madden (James Madison), however, return seniors Bryce Madden and another two-way standout in Caden Long (Frostburg State) as they look to get out of the region in 2024. The emergence of some key senior leaders and underclassmen to provide depth will be vital to the success of Allegany, as they can lean on Madden and Long to provide a consistent spark. Northern Garrett went 18-5 a year ago and has been on a steady run over the last few years, however, we see Allegany taking the region back in 2024.

1A Region II has been controlled by back-to-back state title winners in Clear Spring, however, the Blazers (along with a plethora of other teams in the region) turn to 2024 with a different look to their roster. Logan Hesler, Damien Pittsnogle, and Hutson Trobaugh have all graduated, leaving the reigns to two-way standout Dawson Kehr (East Carolina). Kehr will have to be the ace of the staff in 2024 and bring some stability to what may look like a fairly young roster. Brunswick loses their horse in Oliver Ellison and a key contributor on the back end in Jack Hamilton, leaving the Railroaders with some question marks on the bump in 2024. Look for Tyler Lowery (Frederick CC) to possibly fill that ace role, with fellow senior Connor Mullaney providing a spark offensively. Catoctin will have some shoes to fill in 2024 as well, as their two-headed monster on the bump in Peyton Castellow and Joey McMannis have both graduated. The Cougars do however return two key bats in the lineup, as junior middle infielders Jacob Bell and Bryont Green are both back to bring stability to the lineup. A program that is built on in-game adjustments and small ball will be fun to watch as the 2024 spring season unfolds. Boonsboro sees their ace in Matthew Koeneke gone to graduation, leaving a hole to be filled on the bump. A name to watch is certainly senior Sam Atkinson (Frostburg State) who will look to lead the Boonsboro offense. This region has a plethora of question marks entering 2024, however, the track record of these programs should make for a highly interesting spring. Adjustments and new roster changes will have to be made, and with Clear Spring being the defending state champion for two straight years, we'll give them the nod to get out of the region once again on the shoulders of Dawson Kehr.

Notes

The 1A North Region I looks to be a two-team race heading into 2024. Havre de Grace and Patterson Mill have pieces on both sides of the ball that should see this region being a dogfight until the end. On paper, Havre de Grace looks to have the best shot at defending their region title from a year ago, as the Warriors enter the 2024 season with eight commitments scattered across their roster. A pitching staff led by the likes of junior Bryce Bauer and seniors Taylor Blevins (Mansfield), Wayne Hudson (Albright), and Dyllon Zachry-Nance (Charleston WV), Havre de Grace has plenty of experienced options to turn to throughout the season. Offensively, the Warriors will be led by two ways Bauer, Blevins, Hudson, and Zachry-Nance, as well as standouts Tyler Stwarka (Valley Forge), Mason Waller (Notre Dame of Maryland), and Logan Ward (Notre Dame of Maryland). Patterson Mill will be an interesting follow, as standout two-way Michael Hemelt (Frostburg State) and Tre McInnes will look to lead the Huskies into a deep run in 2024. If Havre de Grace sees their experienced leaders play consistently this spring, look for the Cougars to make their way out of the region again this spring.

The 1A North Region II saw Pikesville escape in 2024, leading to a matchup with Clear Spring in the state semi-finals a year ago. We see Pikesville being competitive and making a strong run again, as impact bats in juniors Michael Hagan and Will Holliday are back to provide depth throughout the lineup behind standout two-way senior Jack Millman. Millman will lead the staff on the bump and will look to have a dominant 2024 campaign as he did last year. South Carroll returns two key arms from a year ago in seniors Braden Cordrey and all-county recipient, two-way Hayden Rathmann. Look for freshman Jackson Wineke to provide some depth in the lineup as well, as the young middle infielder has a promising future ahead of him. Liberty drops down from 2A and will be the team to beat in our eyes. A program that has been one of the top teams to beat across Carroll County over the years, we don't see much change in the success in 2024. Led by senior lefty Rocco Dietz on the bump, the Lions are extremely talented on both sides of the ball including the likes of fellow senior Luke Burger and junior standout middle infielder Nate Martin. Look for junior Braden Chubb to provide some depth along with some key underclassmen as well. If Dietz can be as dominant as he was in 2023 where he worked to a 1.36 ERA and a 5-0 record, look for Liberty to be the team to beat in this region.

Notes

1A South Region I features eight Baltimore County schools that’ll lock horns in an attempt to head to the state playoffs. Edmondson-Westside took home the region title in 2023, and we expect them to be a part of a three-team race alongside ACCE and Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass brings back junior Kevin Sevilla Castillo as he attempts to surge the Ducks into a region final appearance. ACCE brings back a strong junior class highlighted by Aram Dagdigian that’ll allow the Eagles to give anyone in this region a good fight.

1A South Region II has been dominated by the Central Falcons over the last few years as we see this region once again being a two-man race between the Falcons and CMIT North. CMIT North returns the top player in Prince George’s County with senior speedster Brice Johnson (Thomas Jefferson) as he will look to repeat a season that was one of the most dominant seasons in PG county history, as Johnson slashed .780 while hitting 7 homers. Central brings in one of the top offenses in the county as they averaged almost 13 runs a game in 2023, and look to once again have their offense lead them to their third straight region title.

1A East

Region I Region II
Colonel Richardson Crisfield
Kent County Washington
St. Michaels Mardela
Cambridge South Dorchester Pocomoke
North Dorchester Snow Hill

Notes

1A East Region I sees no change post-realignment, as this region has always been one of the most competitive across the classification as the winner of this region has gone on to play in the state championship every year since 2018. Colonel Richardson comes off yet again another loss in the state title game, this one a heartbreaking one-run loss in extra innings. The Colonels made a splash over the offseason, bringing in one of the top prep arms in the state in junior Jordan Regulski. The rotation looks as strong as ever for Colonel Richardson, led by Regulski, followed by the likes of Daniel Hesson (Salisbury), Jack Walls, and Brayden Dadds. Offensively, the Colonels look to find new life in the lineup after the heart of their order departed following last season. The biggest threat to the Colonels is St. Michaels, who made a splash of their own, bringing back star-studded senior Jacob Seek (San Jacinto JC). The Saints will turn to a slew of depth to provide quality innings, highlighted by Will Sherwood, Anthony Massaro (Chesapeake), Jacob Bealefeld, and Bobby Fink. Offensively, look for a pair of seniors in Henry Mullikin (Salisbury) and Hunter Gottleib, along with sophomore Connor Wheeler to lead the Saints in an attempt to knock off the Colonels. North Dorchester had one of their best seasons in school history in 2023, however, they will head back to the drawing board after losing almost every starter from a year ago. Coach Morrissette does bring back senior two-way John Boyle, along with juniors Blake Bramble and Wesley Windsor who should look to lead an inexperienced and young Eagles squad. Kent County and Cambridge-South Dorchester are both extremely young programs that we believe lack the talent to compete with the top two, however, keep eyes on sophomore Tanner Coulbourne from CSD as he is primed for a breakout season.

1A East Region II also saw no changes as Snow Hill once again took home the region championship, however had a much more difficult path after Mardela and Washington gave them troubles early on. Expect coach Todd Lampman to once again have his program prepared for every possible obstacle, led by a trio of seniors on the mound in Danner Swift (CCBC Essex), Garrett Williams (Chesapeake JC), and Dominic Kuipers. Look offensively for junior Justin Shipley and sophomore J. Finn Mahoney to lead this Eagles team back to the state tournament. Washington comes off one of their better seasons in recent memory, and we expect them to have continued success. Losing Gavin McIntyre will hurt the Jaguars, however they do return a majority of their rotation, led by Doug Fischer (Northwestern Ohio), Jalen Wigfall, Cole Miles, and Evan Dryden. Expect junior standout Dawson Daniels to lead the pack alongside Miles and Wigfall as the Jaguars look to play spoiler in 2024. Mardela will look to their senior leaders on both sides of the ball, however, we expect a breakout sophomore season from Nathan Feather so the Warriors are a team to keep tabs on. Pocomoke and Crisfield have some pieces in place for 2024, however, we believe they will struggle towards the end of the year and lack the depth to make a deep run this spring.
