Stellar pitching from Burke’s starting pitcher Gage Oetter helped stave off elimination for Omaha Burke as they defeated Papillion La-Vista South, 4-1.

The Titans started things in the bottom of the first inning after leading off with two hits and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases with one out. Papio South’s Austin Sides brought in Trenton Brehm on a sacrifice fly to put the Titans up 1-0.

Sides and Oetter held both offenses at bay through the middle innings of the contest before Burke finally broke through. After runners were moved over to second and third in the fifth frame, Spencer Cooper delivered a two-run single to put Burke up 2-1.

Tyler Mackling replaced Sides in the sixth inning, as the Bulldogs continued to add to their lead over Papio South. A leadoff single and a throwing error gave the Titans first and third with two outs in the frame.

An overthrow on a steal attempt by Austin Denhoed behind the plate allowed Burke to add another run. Dalton Ferrin then followed that up with an RBI double to extend Burke’s lead to 4-1 in the sixth.

Corbin Paddack replaced Oetter on the mound and shut down any attempt at a comeback by Papio South for the final inning. After surrendering a leadoff walk, he got two flyouts and a groundout to keep Burke alive in the American Division of state at Westside

Omaha Burke advances to take on Gretna on Tuesday while Papillion La-Vista South is eliminated from the state tournament.
