Trackman Traits- Hitting: 2024 C Noah Wasiura (West Seneca West)

Welcome back to the hitting side of Trackman Traits. In this series we will spotlight one player each week who stood out during this 2020 season and take a deeper dive into their numbers and take a look at some that really stand out. Since the implementation of the Trackman technology to our showcases this summer we have been fortunate enough to have seen a great deal of talent come through the system. Today, we will be taking a look at the number one catcher in New York's 2024 class, Noah Wasiura.

Before we get started, we'll go over and define some of the terminology being used in the piece. 

Exit Velocity-  this one's pretty simple but this metric measures the speed of the ball off the bat, measured in miles per hour (MPH).

Distance- another simple one, this metric measures how far the ball traveled or would travel if it was not obstructed, measured in feet.

Launch Angle- measures the vertical angle of the ball as it leaves the bat. Positive numbers represent balls traveling upward off of the bat and negative numbers mean the ball is traveling downward off of the bat. 

Fly Ball %-  Percentage of fly balls hit during a given set of batted ball events. Trackman defines a fly ball as any batted ball with a launch angle between 25 degrees and 49.9 degrees. 

Line Drive%-  Percentage of line drives hit during a given set of batted ball events. Trackman defines a line drive as any batted ball with a launch angle between 10 degrees and 24.9 degrees.

Ground Ball %- Percentage of ground balls hit during a given set of batted ball events. Trackman defines a ground ball as any batted ball with a launch angle below 9.9 degrees. 

Hard Hit%-  Percentage of batted balls with an exit velocity of 90 MPH or higher. 

Bat Speed- The speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact, measured in MPH. The sweet spot is measured 6 inches from the tip of the bat. - Blast Motion

Hand Speed-  The speed of the handle of the bat just before impact, measured in MPH. The handle us measured 6 inches from the knob of the bat. - Blast Motion

Rotational Acceleration- A measure of how quickly the hitter gets from launch position to being on plane. This is measured in G-Force (g).  - Blast Motion 

On Plane Efficiency %-   A measure of the percentage of your swing that was on the swing plane. -Blast Motion

TRACKMAN DATA ANALYSIS

We got a chance to catch up with the young Wasiura a few times during the 2020 campaign including visits at the Jr. NYS Games and at the Northeast Jr. Futures Games. Today, we will be taking a look into the numbers he put up at the Jr. Futures Games.

Exit Velocity- Taking a look at the exit velocity, Wasiura topped out at 93.65 MPH. For a player that young, I think anything above 85 MPH is hitting the ball pretty hard. At 5-foot-9, 182 pounds, Wasiura should still have some room to grow/fill out, so I wouldn't be quite expecting the triple digits from someone this young. His average exit velocity fell just under that 85 MPH mark, but again, for someone this young, that's still really solid. As he continues to mature, expect those numbers to go up. 

Distance-  Wasiura showed a little bit of pop in his bat, with his max distance at 339 ft. You put that 339 down the lines and you'll run yourself into a few long balls. Like with his exit velocity, these numbers will undoubtedly see a rise as he matures physically. Like his max distance, his average distance matched up quite well amongst his peers. At the Northeast Jr. Futures Games, Wasiura's max distance of 339 ft was good for second at the event and his average distance of 250 ft was first among all attendees. While they might not jump out in your face right away like someone who is hitting the ball 400 ft, these numbers are quite good for a player his age and the way he's trending, there should be no reason we won't see a jump in those numbers this season.

Batted Ball Percentages-  Wasiura put most of his balls in play in the air, hitting fly balls 58.3% of the time. Having the average distance he did was aided by his fly ball %, but it's an avenue for damage as he continues to add strength and his increases his exit velocities. He hit line drives 33.3% of the time, another avenue for success no matter one's exit velocity capabilities. Another metric that I always like to look at is the hard hit %. Generally, I like to see guys 60% or higher in this metric, as it's a good indicator of their consistency in barreling balls up. In Wasiura's case, his hard hit % was just 8.3% meaning he only hit the ball over 90 MPH 8.3% of the time. Again, as Wasiura continues to mature, I have no doubt he will be raising this number as well. I believe in his swing, and for players that young, anything over 85 MPH to me is what I would consider hard contact, and his average exit velocity fell right at that mark, so I'm not too worried that his hard hit % is lower than other features in the past. 

BLAST CONNECTION

Trackman does a great job showing the outcomes of players swings and their batted ball events. Its data is results based, the best numbers come when you get off your best swing and make your best contact. Blast Motion technology, also implemented at the same time this summer as the Trackman, tracks the swing data of a player and can shine a light into what a player does well in their swing. When paired with Trackman data, it can paint a more complete picture of a hitter and help explain why a player is able to hit the ball harder, farther, and more consistently than others. 

Taking a look into the Blast Metrics, the first one that stands out to me for Wasiura is his rotational acceleration. His max was 28.8 G's and his average was 22.31 G's, both high marks in that category. This means Wasiura's swing is not all arms, he uses his legs and core in his swing well, he sequences well, and ultimately will have more adjustability in his swing. Another number that stood out was the on-plane efficiency %, where he was at 75%. In all players, a score of over 70% is considered ideal, so this is a good sign to see him above that number. Players with higher numbers in this category are the ones who keep their barrel in the hitting zone longer, allowing a player to be either a tad early or late on a pitch and still be able to find the barrel. This can be another reason we saw Wasiura among the leaders in both exit velocity and distance.

CONCLUSION

In all, Wasiura is an exciting prospect. He is someone who already shows advanced tools, and should only be able to grow upon the performances he made last year. We look forward to catching up with the young backstop to track the progress he has made coming into this spring.
