OK Preseason Preview: Edmond Memorial

Oklahoma Staff

The Oklahoma high school baseball season kicks off on Feb. 21 for A-B, and March 1 for 2A-6A. Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2022 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, leading into a countdown through the official PBR Oklahoma Preseason Power 25 Rankings.

We’ve submitted a Preseason Questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided in our team-by-team preseason analysis.

Our 2022 preseason coverage continues today.

Team: Edmond Memorial
2021 Record: 26-10
Classification: 6A
Head Coach: JP Holman
Years at the Helm: 8

OUTLOOK

After a tough finish to the 2021 season that saw the Bulldogs falling to the eventual State Champions in the regional, Coach Holman's squad returns a good amount of impact players to try and make another run deep into May in 2022.   The Bulldogs have the advantage of one of the top arms in the country at their disposal to take on the State's best in district games as well as multiple other arms that have shown the potential to take over games.  Offensively they have a solid mix of faster table-setters and guys with strong gap power to generate some offense as well as a good feel for baserunning as team collective.  They will have to replace a couple of big contributors off of last year's squad such as catcher Wes Hicks and leadoff man Christian McClendon, but should have enough returners to help ease in some of their more inexperienced players on the roster and allow them to get settled in at the Varsity level.  If the Bulldogs can continue to pitch at a high level as well as get some of their newcomers off to a good start, Coach Holman's squad has the potential to play with anyone in the State and try to make a run at a State Title.

Impact PLAYERS

Noah Kang, SS/RHP, 2022, OU Commit

Kang returns to the lineup where he has been a mainstay at the top of the order as well as providing flashy defense at the short stop position. Kang has a quick twitch swing and has shown the ability to provide good gap power to both sides of the field and has come up with big hits in the past for the Bulldogs. The OU commit shows good range defensively and has enough arm strength to make plays deep into the hole. Kang will also hop on the mound and use his mid 80's fastball and plus changeup to provide good depth to the pitching staff. The Bulldogs will rely on Kang to continue to bring high energy at the top of the order and setting the table for some of the run-producing guys right behind him in the lineup.

Parker Coil, LHP/1B, 2022, Arkansas Commit

The Arkansas commit returns to anchor the Bulldog staff in 2022 after a big 2021 season.  If you need an arm to go out and win you one game in the State, Coil would be on that short list of guys using his upper 80's to low 90's fastball that will show some cut at times as well as a swing and miss curveball.  Coil has also been working on developing a slider to add to the arsenal making him even more dangerous on the mound.  Coil is also a very solid hitter that will hit in the middle of the order for Memorial this Spring and will continue to be relied upon to be a run-producer with sneaky pop.  Coil will take the ball against some of the better arms in the State during District games and will be a big key to the success for the Bulldogs in 2022.

Owen Tracy, RHP/OF, 2022, NOC Enid commit

Tracy spent a good portion of the 2021 season as the Bulldog three-hole in the lineup and showed good barrel control as well as some strength at contact.  Tracy has shown the ability to drive the ball in the gaps for doubles power and with his 6-foot-4 and 195-pound frame it would be easy to see him continue to develop even more power with his high leverage swing.  Tracy provides some defensive versatility where he shows a strong arm in the outfield as well as can hop over and play some solid defense at first base.  Tracy will also be relied upon to provide some innings on the mound in 2022 where he uses his mid to upper 80's fastball and comes right after hitters.  If the Bulldogs want to take another step above their finish in 2021, Tracy will need to play a big role on both sides of the ball both in driving in runs as well as picking up big innings on the bump.

Cam Chalfant, RHP/3B, 2022

Chalfant has the type of arm and ability to take the Bulldogs to the next level and with another small jump he can make a huge impact in 2022.  Chalfant has shown the ability to work the fastball in the upper 80's in the past and pairs it nicely with a very tight and hard upper 70's slider that can be a true swing and miss pitch.  Holding his stuff over the course of his start and maintaining his velocity as well will be a big key for Cam this Spring.  Chalfant will also be used in the infield as a third baseman where he has shown the ability to collect hits as well as provide solid defense at the hot corner.
