OSSAA Power 25: Week Two

Scott Hood
Oklahoma State Director

We enter week 3 of the season with teams still looking to seperate themselves and a few already making big statements in the young season.  As we head into Spring Break, we've already seen teams show their strength in their District games and a few programs vaulting themselves up the Power 25.  As always, results on the field matters with heavier weighting towards the district games, and for this week's purposes, games played within the state's border.  Strength of schedule continues to also be a main factor as we don't punish teams that have already played multiple Power 25 opponents against a few programs that have racked up wins against lower tier competition.  While recent results and trends play a factor in the Power 25, we still look at each program's entire resume since opening day to get the complete picture of each team.

Owasso remains at the top of the rankings for the third straight week and a 9-3 record.  In a season where few teams have fully separated themselves, Owasso still remains on the of the toughest teams to handle in a series thanks to two of the some of the best left-handed arms in the region.  Bixby remains number 2  on the list as they continue their quest for a repeat in 6A.   The Spartans will arguably have their toughest week of the season thus far this coming week as they take on 3 Power 25 teams and one of the top teams from Nebraska.  Carl Albert remains at number 3 in the Power 25 as they start their run at returning as 5A champs with a 7-1 record.  Even with the loss to a surging Elgin squad on Friday, the Titans still have a strong resume to go along with one of the most talented rosters in the state.

Tuttls makes a move up to number 5 after beating their rivals Blanchard in a back and forth affair and then splitting a pair of games the next day with arguably their toughest competition in 4A in Elk City.  Elk City sees their stock rise a spot to number 7 thanks to the win against Tuttle and having arguably the most dominant arm in the state going right now in Kash Mayfield.  Choctaw makes a move up to number 11 after getting off to a 6-0 record.  While the roster has talent up and down, we should get a better understanding of the Yellowjackets in the coming weeks as their schedule begins to toughen up.

The biggest mover within the Power 25 rankings this week is the aformentioned Elgin Owls after an impressive 9-2 win against Carl Albert on Friday afternoon.  The Owls remain undefeated and are still getting big contributions out of their younger roster making their arrival to the top of the list possibly a year ahead of schedule.  Nobody has seen their stock rise as high as Moore in the past couple of days, making their debut into the Power 25 at number 14 on the list.  The Lions had a 3-1 week with big wins over Sand Springs and Edmond North as well as taking down a tough Noble squad.  The other newcomer to the Power 25 this list is another westside 6A program that has been surging in the right direction in Norman North.  The Timberwolves went a perfect 4-0 on the week including a district sweep of Jenks and has begun to really get the bats hot while also only allowing 4 runs in their last 4 games.
