Future Game Trials: 20 Takes On 20 Guys

As we begin to roll out events across the country, PBR Ontario is back on track with the Future Games Trials. While we won’t be making the trip down to Georgia, there’s no shortage of talent in our 2022 and 2023 class.

Here’s 20 thoughts on 20 guys that have a chance to turn some heads at our upcoming event on August the 6th and 7th at University of Toronto in Scarborough, ON.

Owen Constantineau 1B / Colonel By, ON / 2022

Report: We saw Constantineau at the Ottawa Knights Scout Day last year. He was one of the younger guys there, but his left-handed swing was pretty sweet. We’ve seen the video since, but this will be a chance for us to see the strides he’s taken in that time. Watch for him to smash a bit.

Cameron Chee-Aloy OF / SS / Neil McNeil, ON / 2022

Report: One of the best athletes in the class, Chee is the epitome of twitch and energy. I’ve never seen him take a play off, and he doesn’t seem to have much of an “off” button. He might be the best outfielder coming out of this event. Father, Jason, was a staple with the MLB Scouting Bureau.

Cole Smart C / 1B / Sir John A MacDonald, ON / 2023

Report: One of the younger pups at the event, Smart is a physical presence behind the plate, and he’s no slouch at the dish, either. A left-handed hitter with pop to all fields, Smart has a chance to grow into one of the better catchers in Ontario’s 2023 class, and maybe even the country.

Owen Hill OF / RHP / St James Catholic, ON / 2022

Report: There is raw athleticism with Hill and the speed and base stealing ability is real as he must’ve swiped 10 bags this past weekend. Away from the diamond, he’s on scholarship to Barbados this Fall to play water polo.

Jax Nyberg LHP / OF / Dennis O'Connor Catholic SS, ON / 2022

Report: A tall, lanky, left-handed arm, Jax Nyberg is going to be a guy I’ll be locking in on. The velo isn’t quite there yet, but how can you not watch a 6-4, 180-pound lefty who hasn’t filled into his body yet?

Daniel Howat LHP / 1B / Assumption, ON / 2022

Report: Howat impressed last time we saw him indoors in Kitchener. The arm works, it has the potential for three-pitch mix and and the stuff will play and only get better. We’ve heard the work-ethic is top notch so needless to say we are excited to see Howat next week.

Luis Pimentel Guerrero OF / SS / Corpus Christi, ON / 2022

Report: He may not be the guy you notice off the bus, but he’s the guy you don’t forget about on your way back. At No. 2 in our 2022 class, you could argue Pimentel is one of the most elite players in the country. He’s a sub-7 runner who throws 90+ from the OF, and hits well from both sides of the plate. One of the top uncommitted players, don’t see it staying that way for long.

Kurt Barr RHP / SS / St. Anne Catholic, ON / 2022

Report: We saw Barr on a freezing cold Scout Day in Windsor to end 2019. He was 79mph that day. Well, we just got another video this week and he’s running his stuff up to 87mph. Why? Because Windsor’s always had talent, and as new members of the CPBL, they’re ready to make some noise.

Carson Lumley RHP / OF / Mother Teresa, ON / 2022

Report: The top arm in our 2022 class, it’s one of the quickest arms around and there is feel to spin the curveball. Lumley has video of him indoors letting it eat in the 88-90 range, and there is a good chance he could be the next 2022 off the board.

Colby Ariss SS / RHP / Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic, ON / 2022

Report: Ariss is such an interesting player because you don’t know what he’ll do down the road. At 6-2, and 170-pounds, he is nowhere near filling out. The FB has been in the 83-85 range with a curveball while the swing plays from the left side while being an up the middle defender.

Sawyer Whitaker C / 2B / Clarkson, ON / 2022

Report: When we saw him at our New year Open, he stood out behind the plate and looked to have some ability in the box. The catch and movement really caught our attention and he’s someone that you get excited to just sit and watch catch.

Jonah Tong RHP / OF / Bill Crothers, ON / 2022

Report: The arm works and it's a low 70’s curveball with 12/6 shape and can really show some bite at times. Crossfire delivery, it's a little undersized in the strength category but he’s been in mid 80’s with the heater so you hope more to come.

Noah Williams 1B / Strathroy District Collegiate Institute, ON / 2022

Report: This is a big, strong left-handed hitting first-baseman out of London with the Badgers. The ball jumps off the bat, and Williams putting up triple digits off the bat is not out of the question. This guy has some juice.

Zachary Christie 1B / RHP / Nottawasaga Pines Secondary School, ON / 2022

Report: First time we saw Christie, he put on one of the most incredible BP sessions we saw in 2019. At Welland Stadium he left the yard maybe 8 or 9 times, earning his spot on the Junior Future Games team. A Sudbury boy who now plays for Rick Johnston in Mississauga, word is he’s slimmed down, and still crushing. Watch out.

Cameron Gurney C / SS / Pauline Johnson, ON / 2022

Report: He’s a burly 6-0, 180-pounds, and works the ball from pole to pole. He’s new to catching, but the actions have looked like he has a chance to stay back there as the arm fits in nicely and will control the running game.

Lachlan Maude C / 3B / Silverthorn Collegiate Institute, ON / 2023

Report: Maude is a can’t miss, literally at 6-foot-3, 200-pounds, you a drawn to him right away on the diamond. Now a 2023 grad, college coaches are going to be in on this guy as the ceiling is very high right now.

Jordin Limnidis SS / C / Craig Kielburger, ON / 2022

Report: He’s got a loud bat from the left side and the fundamentals and actions that make you want to see it in game action. There is athleticism to work with and Limnidis has a chance to really make a jump once we get into game play.

Eric Calder 1B / LHP / Thomas A. Blakelock, ON / 2022

Report: Calder has been putting real good swings on baseball as of late with loud contact and spraying it across the field. Presently a first baseman right now, but the way his body is working, he could end up in the outfield. This left-handed bat might be one of the better BP’s on the day.

Jackson Soucie LHP / 1B / St. Benedicts CSS, ON / 2022

Report: We’ve known about Soucie for a while now, but the intrigue continues to build up. He’s a big physical lefty who’s mid 80s, and he can hit, too. Older brother Tyler pitched at Canisius and now is a big part of his training and preparation.

Jack Cohen RHP / OF / Ecole secondaire catholique Renaissance, ON / 2023

Report: Out of Newmarket, we haven’t gotten too many looks at Cohen, which begs the question, why is he on this list? Because he’s a long, gangly righty, he’s one of the youngest guys at the event, and he could be one of the better ones.
