New Faces For Team Canada - The Catchers

Last year we saw 4 different catchers dawn the red and white for the Canadian Junior National Team in Owen Diodati, Ryan Leitch, Raphael Pelletier and Ayden Makarus.

This year in 2020, will have the opportunity to see all new fresh faces handling the National Team staff with two players out of the west coast in BC with Connor Caskenette and Russell Young and two left-handed hitting catchers in Tyson Gomm from Ontario and Max Grant out of New Brunswick.

We take a look at each catcher and what they will bring to the table for the country this March in Florida.

Connor Caskenette C / 3B / Cowichan, BC / 2020

Report: Caskinette profiles well behind the dish as a sturdy, 6-foot, 195-pound right-handed hitting catcher who does a lot of things well on both sides of the ball. The Bossier Parish commit was an Area Codes participant this summer and is one of the more nationally recognized players from the 2020 class. He throws and receives well with carry through the bag and moves well for his frame. Offensively, it's a short stroke with a natural uphill path with strong hands and wrists that help generate bat speed through the zone and a power stroke to his pull side. Caskenette will garner attention this spring and will be looked upon to carry the torch behind the dish for Canada.

Max Grant OF / SS / Vauxhall Academy, AB / 2020

Report: Grant, a Canisius commit from New Brunswick but plays his ball in Alberta for Vauxhall is a left-handed bat with feel and poise in the box. He controls the barrel and his body well, using the entire field with present gap power with room to project more to come as he matures. An adequate defender who keeps it simple, we are excited to see Grant against the upcoming competition and more so how he fares at the plate with big time velocity and stuff coming his way. A very intriguing player who we feel could surprise some people in March and be one of the more quiet leaders who goes about his business the right way on a team with so many fresh faces.

Russell Young C / OF / Langley, BC / 2020

Report: The Gonzaga is the most athletic of the bunch as he runs fairly well and can also give you quality innings in the outfield. There is arm strength from Young and really showed quickness in the hands and at the plate during his time at T12. The right-handed hitter is more pull oriented and shown the ability to hit the fastball, while defensively he moves well in his lower half and done a real good job of working on his body gaining strength, with room to still continue to fill out.

Tyson Gomm C / 2B / Port Credit, ON / 2021

Report: There has been a Gomm on the Canadian roster the past two years and will be no different in 2020, except for the first name. Tyson will get his 1st opportunity to wear Canada across his chest and should have a pretty good idea of what that's all about as big brother Austim was a regular at shortstop for Team C. Tyson finished the year on fire with performances at the Future Games and carried that into T12, eventually being named the tournament MVP. He’s one of the most improved players in the country where the hit tool is present and has really cleaned up his actions defensively. The frame has current strength and Gomm plays a tough, in your face type of style that exemplifies a lot of the qualities needed behind the dish.
