Game Recap: Susquehanna Township vs. Twin Valley (PIAA District 3 Playoffs Round Two)

Susquehanna Township 8, Twin Valley 3

Twin Valley, the No. 2 seed in the District III AAA tournament field, came into Thursday's quarterfinal affair with an 18-2 record and a senior right-handed pitcher in A.J. Alexy who has been creating MLB Draft buzz all spring with a fastball that sits in the low 90s and a pair of quality off-speed pitches. Susquehanna Township was unfazed getting a home run from Ben Moser in the 1st inning that jump started their offense.

Alexy cruised through the 2nd and 3rd innings and Andrew Sorber's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 2nd tied things up at 1-1, setting up what appeared to be a pitcher's duel. Indians senior right-hander Austin Dressler faced just one batter over the minimum in his first three innings of work including five strikeouts.

The game turned dramatically in the Indians favor in the top of the 4th inning as they batted around and plated five runs on just two hits. Alexy appeared to have worked out of a first and third, two-out jam with a strikeout, but a curveball for strike three alluded his catcher extending the inning. A second two-out strikeout was also mishandled and a subsequent throwing error cleared the bases. When the dust settled the Indians carried a 6-1 lead to the bottom of the 4th and Alexy's night on the mound was over.

The teams traded two-run innings in the 5th to account for the 8-3 final. Dressler (5 IP, 5 H, 3 R) picked up the win and fellow seniors Joel Watts and Jordan Caruso each tossed an inning of scoreless relief to close things out.

Susquehanna Township manufactured their eight runs on just four hits. The Indians were aided by three Twin Valley errors, two hit batters, five walks and two passed balls. Colin Hartey (2-4, 3B) and Zach Rice (1-3, HR) led the Twin Valley attack.
