Top Stories of 2015: #10 Long-tenured Coaches Say Goodbye

Coaching changes are an annual occurrence, but this off-season seemed to be particularly heavy when it came to long-tenured, highly successful coaches moving on. What follows is by no means an exhaustive list, but a few of the more notable departures (some of their own volition and some by administrative decree) that have come across our radar.

  • Bob Thomas retired from Chambersburg Area following an astonishing 51 years at the helm, a 833-279 career record, eleven PIAA District III crowns, and three PIAA state titles.
  • Karl Reisner retired at Mercersburg Academy after 24 seasons with 356 career wins (most in school history) and four PAISAA crowns.
  • Bill Sassaman did not have his contract renewed at Manheim Township after 23 seasons as head coach (and 31 total with the program), a 339-180 career record (most in school history) and four PIAA state tournament berths.
  • 15-year veteran Jason Munley will not return to Valley View after the school board went against the superintendent's recommendation and voted against retaining him. The Cougars went 81-18 over the past six seasons and reached two of the past three PIAA District II class 3A title games.
  • Tony Galucy resigned at Parkland after 13 seasons, a 242-72 career record, and five PIAA District XI class 4A championships (including the last three in a row).
  • Reports indicate that Holy Ghost Prep requested the resignation of Keith Smeraglio after 11 seasons, a 175-59 record, and two PIAA District I class 3A championships.
  • Roger Czerwinski resigned at West York Area after seven seasons, a 118-43 record, and back-to-back PIAA class 3A state titles in 2012 and 2013.
