Western PA Fall Review Analysis: Class of 2018

The fall schedule of PBR events in Pennsylvania began this past weekend with the 2016 Western PA Fall Review at La Roche College. Over 30 prospects from two states gathered to showcase their abilities during the course of two nine-inning games and a showcase. Today we continue our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at the prospects that participated from the Class of 2018.

TOP PROSPECTS

Andrew Funovits, OF/RHP, Seneca Valley HS
Athletic, 6-foot-1, 175-pound two-way prospect stood out with solid across the board skill set. Ran a 7.06 60-yard dash on this day, but has posted a 6.81 previously. Displayed solid routes to the baseball and advanced arm strength (90 mph) from his outfield position. Right-handed hitter with some arm-bar action showed good barrel control and went had a double and a hard line out to right field in three at bats during game action. Arm strength translates to the mound where he sat 81-83 with a quick, clean arm action out of a high 3/4 arm slot. Also commanded a 77 mph slider with late breaking action.

Bo Haines, OF/LHP, Ringgold HS
Physical, 5-foot-11, 210-pound left-handed hitter displayed his pop (95 mph) and his foot speed (4.45 on the turn) on a double during game action. Haines ran an event best 6.71 60-yard dash, registered 84 mph arm strength from the outfield and topped at 80 mph off the mound. Haines
is a dead pull hitter with present power. He has the athleticism to be able to drive the baseball to all fields with some swing adjustments that would allow him to be a middle of the order run producer at the next level.

Justin Hamm, SS/2B, North Allegheny HS
A bit undersized at 5-foot-10, 150-pounds, the junior showcased above average defensive abilities making a number of athletic plays during game action. Projects best a second baseman at this point with 7.34 60-yard dash and 79 mph arm strength, but active feet, and soft glove hand would easily work on the left side of the infield with strength gains moving forward. The right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a toe-tap stride to initiate his swing. He displayed a good barrel control and a bat exit velocity of 79 mph while going 3-for-6 during game action.

Travis Perry, RHP/UTIL, Rocky Grove HS
6-foot-7, 200-pound two-way prospect has impressed all summer on the mound, topping at 87 mph during a solid effort in the PBR Future Games in August. On this date Perry showcased his abilities with the bat. The right-handed hitter flashed a 95 mph bat exit velocity launching several home runs in batting practice followed by a long home run to left in his first at bat in game action. Perry also displayed some present power in a round of batting practice as a left-handed hitter. On the day the junior went 3-for-6 at the plate while also registering a 7.16 60-yard dash.


Sevin Schoeneweis, RHP/OF, Moon Area HS
6-foot, 170-pound right-hander has had a breakout summer and built on his solid performance at the PBR Future Games on this day. His velocity was down a few ticks from his 84-86 topping at 87 mph in August, but his command of four pitches was still evident. Schoeneweis allowed one run in three innings of work with three strikeouts. He used a fastball, curveball, slider changeup mix effectively and got six ground ball outs as a result. The junior showed his athleticism running a 7.02 60-yard dash while also flashing 88 mph arm strength from the outfield.

Dylan Swarmer, C/3B, Knoch HS
6-foot, 180-pound catcher has above average tools with the potential to be a quality defender at the next level. Flashed pop times of 2.09-2.18 with solid carry on throws of 75 mph from the crouch. Some minor changes in his transfer could lead to those times creeping towards the 2.00 mark. Right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and uses a leg-lift to initiate his swing. Showed above average barrel whip (91 mph bat exit velocity) with some present power.

Max Daley, C/3B, Pittsburgh Central Catholic HS
5-foot-9, 195-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a short, lift-and-replace stride. Registered an 80 mph bat exit velocity and went 1-for-3 at the plate in game one. Displayed 67 mph arm strength from the crouch and pop times of 2.30-2.40. Displayed soft glove hand and solid blocking skills.

James Diamond, 1B/3B, Moon Area HS

5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed hitter went 1-for-3 with a triple in game one action while registering a bat exit velocity of 86 mph. Starts from a wide stance with a high hands load and uses a leg-lift stride to initiate his swing. Ran a 7.76 60-yard dash and displayed capable glove work around the bag at first base.

Anthony Fachet, OF, Moon Area HS
5-foot-8, 175-pound left-handed hitter went 2-for-5 with a walk in game action while also showing a solid feel for the barrel in batting practice. He starts from a square stance and uses a controlled, leg-lift stride to initiate his swing. Registered an 81 mph bat exit velocity and displayed the ability to use all fields. 7.32 runner showcased athletic actions defensively with accurate 77 mph arm strength from the outfield.

Brett Heckert, 2B/SS, North Allegheny HS
5-foot-11, 135-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a leg-lift stride. Displayed good rhythm and barrel control with a line drive approach registering a bat exit velocity of 73 mph. Ran a 7.64 60-yard dash and showcased accurate 66 mph arm strength from multiple arm angles defensively. Overall game will benefit from physical maturity and continued strength gains.

Jacob Keene, 3B/1B, Butler Area HS
Physical 5-foot-11, 215-pound right-handed hitter went 1-for-4 with a walk during game action. Starts from a square stance and utilizes a short, lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing from a high hands load. Displayed solid feel for the barrel with a strong lower half and a bat exit velocity of 85 mph. Corner infielder displayed capable defensive actions at both positions with good carry on throws of 79 mph from third base.

Dylan Kingan, RHP/1B, Eden Christian Academy
6-foot-3, 175-pound primary pitcher shined during three innings of scoreless work on the mound. Sat 73-75 from a 3/4 arm slot but has been up to 80 mph this summer. Easy, loose, repeatable delivery with much more in the tank. Commanded a slider, curveball mix for strikes out of the same arm slot and displayed excellent feel for his 72 mph changeup. Faced the minimum while allowing just one ball to leave the infield. Right-handed hitter showcased 80 mph bat exit velocity and solid actions defensively at first base.

Isaiah Lucas, OF/RHP, Butler Area HS
6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed hitter has shown an above average ability to hit during several events this summer. He wasted little time in showcasing that ability jumping on the first pitch that he saw in game action for a triple to left-center field. Lucas did not participate in showcase activities on this date but has displayed 7.00 foot speed and an 88 mph bat exit velocity over the course of the summer. The junior also topped at 75 mph from the mound during three innings of work on the mound allowing just one run.

Cal Nicotra, 2B/SS, North Allegheny HS
5-foot-5, 140-pound right-handed hitter went 2-for-4 in game action with an RBI. He starts from a square stance and utilizes a leg lift stride to initiate his swing with a bat exit velocity of 78 mph. The junior displayed accurate 71 mph arm strength defensively and the ability to play through the baseball. A solid all-around skill set will benefit from physical maturity and continued strength gains.

Jordan Pitchford, OF/1B, North Hills HS
5-foot-11, 180-pound left-handed hitter starts from an open stance and utilizes a leg lift stride to initiate his swing. Displayed a flat barrel path, the ability to stay behind the baseball and a solid feel for the barrel with a bat exit velocity of 84 mph. The junior showcased accurate 75 mph arm strength from the outfield and the ability to play through the baseball.

Jake Rathway, 2B/OF, Belle Vernon Area HS
5-foot-8, 155-pound right-handed hitter went 2-for-7 with an RBI in game action on the day. He starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a leg-lift stride. The junior showcased a 70 mph bat exit velocity. Rathway displayed developing defensive abilities as a middle infielder and mid-70s arm strength from his secondary outfield position as well. Continued work on foot speed and core strength will help with overall game moving forward.

Brett Steinle, OF/RHP, Seneca Valley HS
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitter went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in game one action. He starts from a slightly open stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Good pre-pitch rhythm and quick hands lead to a bat exit velocity of 87 mph. Ran a 7.14 60-yard dash and showcased above average defensive abilities with athletic actions and accurate 81 mph arm strength from the outfield. Two-way prospect sat 76-77 from a high 3/4 arm slot with some hip coil to his delivery during three scoreless innings of work on the mound. Also commanded a 64 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation while registering four strikeouts.

Corey Watkins, RHP, North Allegheny HS
6-foot, 245-pound right-hander sat 76-78 from a high 3/4 arm slot. Long-armed action with some hook in the back. Fastball shows some late arm side run. Also displayed a 67 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 68 mph changeup at near fastball arm speed.

Tyler Wright, 1B/RHP, Weirton Maddona HS (WV)
6-foot-2, 205-pound right-handed hitter showcased 83 mph bat exit velocity from a square stance. Initiates his swing with a leg lift stride. Additional barrel whip would be possible with further rotation from his lower half. Showed a glimpse of his power potential with a double off the left-center field wall in his final at bat in game action. Did not take the mound on this day but showed solid glove work around the bag at first base defensively.

Trey Zeroski, SS/RHP, West Allegheny HS
5-foot-10, 140-pound middle infielder showed fluid defensive actions with active feet and above average arm strength across the diamond (84 mph). Right-handed hitter went 2-for-6 with a double and an RBI in game action. The junior starts from a square stance and utilizes a leg-lift stride to initiate his swing. Displayed a solid feel for the barrel and a line drive approach with a bat exit velocity of 73 mph.
