The 2021 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. That excitement may be at an all-time high entering this high school season as the 2020 high school baseball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season during an offseason unlike any other and as always, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at the TSSAA Spring Fling state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams.

We start diving into the Preseason Power 25 Rankings, highlighting some of the deepest clubs across the state. Although we could have done 40+ clubs with so many talented teams getting tuned up for the 2021 season, we can only rank 25 and this list will continue to change as the season plays out on the field.  There will be teams not on the list that will be battling for a state championship come late May, so take it for what it's worth, as no championships have ever been won on paper.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Outlook:

Lipscomb Academy has been building for quite some time after winning the AA state title a decade ago, and last year looked like it could be a break season as they've been finding their footing in D2-AA.  As we all know that season barely got off the ground, and that leaves the Mustangs returning a vast majority of their arms and filling some holes positionally.  For the Mustangs, it will all start with former Future Gamers '23 LHP/1B Miller Green (Georgia Tech) and '22 RHP Will Dugan (Lipscomb). Green was sidelined for good chunk of the summer due to his never ending growth spurt, but looks to be primed to put together a strong full season after showing a low spin FB in mid-upper 80s and high spin curveball.  The big body Dugan continued to improve throughout the fall showing more crispness on his off speed and running the FB up to 90.  Behind that stout one-two punch, a quartet of arms should emerge to log serious innings with '22 RHP Braden Bornstein, '22 RHP Willie Walton, and '22 RHP/3B Andrew Davidson, and Vol State commit RHP/OF Alex Qualls. All four showed the could navigate through opposing lineups while sitting low to mid 80s, and will look to make another jump during the Spring season.  Positionally, the Mustangs will have to replace Jack O'Dowd (Vanderbilt), RHP/C Houston High (Union), and OF Nick Paschall (Cornell FB), but they have a lot of options with deep junior class and steady mix of underclassman.  LHH 3B Hunter High has continued to improve overall, also coming off a state runner up season at starting linebacker.  Seniors Garrett Stacker and Aidan Clatur should help fill the opening up the middle along with Jr. MINF Adam Walker and potentially FR. switch hitter Alex Junghans. Throw in C Aden Napier and OF/LHP Tyler Schrampf to that mix to fill out the roster.  It should be fun to see how head coach Brad Coon will structure the defense and lineup to help back the strong pitching staff he's put together, as he'll have a plethora of options readily available.

Best of luck this season!
