Saxon Roberts (Independence, 2024) Roberts, our #1 player in the 2024 Tennessee class gave us our first look at him in the spring on a very frigid night in the 30’s. The fastball/curveball combination was working early and often as he generated swing and misses throughout his outing. The 1st inning was really the only time he got into some trouble as he started the game with a leadoff walk before giving up back to back singles for 1 run. That was the extent of the damage as he would retire the next 15 batters straight. The velocity was down from where he usually sits as he was 89-91 mph in the first before settling in at 86-88 mph. He isn’t 100% just yet as he gets back from some stiffness but expect the velocity to steadily climb as the season progresses. The arm comes with some late natural crossfire action with a fastball that runs away from right-handers. The breaking-ball was firm nonetheless in the upper 70’s but we have seen that pitch in the low 80’s often. He still had a really quality outing where he would rack up 10 K’s on only 2 walks, while giving up those two hits in the first. Professional scouts will still have their eyes on him as the weather starts getting consistently warmer and still showed why he is considered one of the best arm talents in this class nationally.
