East Texas Summer Open: Quick Hits

On June 14, the PBR Texas team hosted the East Texas Summer Open at Tyler Junior College. The event featured prospects from all HS classes. Today, we take a closer look at some of the standouts from the day

Trent Collier LHP / 1B / Prosper , TX / 2024

The rising senior LHP from Prosper came to East Texas after impressing in late May. He came this time to just pitch, and it was a smart move as he had a really good day on the mound. The Grayson County commit showed a fastball that was 87-91 with life in the zone. He really pounded the glove side with the fastball, but also could throw the fastball to the arm side with a lot of run on it. He had a changeup that he threw with good arm speed in the low 80’s that had good sinking action on it. I also liked the tight slider he threw. It has a late, tight break that he can throw under the righties hands or at their back foot. Collier is headed to the new High School in Prosper for his senior year. And he is trending to give them an Ace on the mound for their 1st year

Nicholas West RHP / Central Heights, TX / 2024

Another standout on the mound was rising Sr. Nicholas West. The 6’3 180 lb. righty has a projectable frame with plenty of room to stack on mass. He has a clean delivery and a quick arm that saw him top out at 89.3. He has a clean arm out of the glove that he repeats well. He throws his entire arsenal with the same tempo and arm action. He showed a quality breaking ball that had good depth and played in the zone. His changeup may be his best offspeed pitch though. He throws it with the same intensity as his fastball and gets quality tumbling action on the pitch. West has plenty of gains to be made still, and I expect his numbers to continue to jump.

Raymundo Vazquez RHP / 3B / Friendswood , TX / 2024

Another rising Senior arm that really stood out was Vazquez. The 6’3 righty from Friendswood is another one with a projectable frame who has more in the tank. The fastball ranged from 84-88 with a lot of arm side run. He throws from a hig ¾ slot. He generates most of his power with his upper body right now, but as he continues to get in his legs and moves quicker there will be another big jump. He showed a quality changeup that had the same action as his fastball and played off it nicely. He threw his breaking ball with good intent and delivered above average spin numbers. It has a sweeping profile to when he gets out front and will be a quality put away pitch to righties. Overall, a really good day for Vazquez

Easton Dean C / 3B / Saint Pius X Houston , TX / 2024

One of the stars of the day was Dean, a LHH catcher from St. Pius X. The physical backstop has a strong, athletic build with more room to gain more. At the plate, Dean starts with a relaxed stance having his hands shoulder high. He starts his load with a leg kick, and his approach seems to be driven to the big part of the field. He showed the ability to hit line drives to all parts of the field, and there is more coming with an approach geared to catch the ball more out front and think pullside more often. He is a good defender behind the plate, He has a good arm and is consistently around a 2.0 pop time. He has strong wrists and is a good receiver behind the plate.

Kayden Bradshaw OF / C / Scurry-Rosser , TX / 2024

One of the best overall days at Tyler Jr. College belonged to Kayden Bradshaw. Bradshaw started his day by running an event best 6.67, and then he went to the defensive drills and delivered the best OF velocity at 88 mph. At the plate, the RHH starts with a pretty neutral set up. He has a slight leg kick to get the operation going, and works to really stay inside the baseball. He had a max exit velocity of 92.7. There is a lot more juice there with a more aggressive approach that is looking to drive the ball to the pull side. Overall, Bradshaw showed a lot of athleticism and he has a chance to impact the game in multiple ways.

Jack Pettigrew OF / OF / Grapevine, TX / 2025

The other toolsy OF in attendance was rising Jr. Jack Pettigrew. The RHH from Grapevine showed well in all phases of the game and will be one to follow closely moving forward. He started his day by running a 6.78 60 showing the required athleticism to play all 3 OF spots. He has a quality arm of 86 mph from the OF as well. At the plate, he showed off some really strong blast numbers, with a max bat speed of 73.4 and a max Rotational Acceleration of 34.4. He has the ability to really impact the baseball. He still has some choppiness in his swing, and with more ab’s as he slows it down and gets more comfortable, Pettigrew could grow into some big power. Overall, Pettigrew is a very athletic player who continues to trend in the right direction.

Tanner Webb RHP / Benton, LA / 2025

Another rising Jr. who caught my eye was RHP Tanner Webb from Benton, LA. The 6’3 250 lb. righty has a big frame, but has good body control and clean mechanics. He consistently threw in the mid 80’s with a clean and efficient arm path. He gets downhill with the pitch, and will be tough to elevate consistently. He showed a tight breaker, that he had good command of in the upper 60’s velo range. As he gets stronger, and throws the pitch with more power it has a chance to make another jump. He also threw a changeup with good fading action, and he really had the ability to kill the spin on the pitch. Overall, Webb showed good pitch ability and strike throwing ability. As he continues to get stronger, he could make some big jumps.
