Hattrup Leads Plano West To Victory In Pitchers Duel

PLANO, TX - The Marcus Marauders and Plano West Wolves met in the first round of the Texas High School Baseball playoffs on Thursday evening, in what was a matchup of number one starters. Marcus sent junior right-hander Blake Mayfield (Texas A&M) to the mound, and Plano West countered with uncommitted junior left-hander Jack Hattrup.

If you liked low scoring affairs that are dominated by stellar pitching performances, this was the game to attend. Both starters were magnificent, each carrying a no-hitter through two innings (Hattrup through 4), neither allowing a run through five, and both tallying at least one strikeout per inning.

Mayfield worked out of a jam in the fourth for Marcus when Plano West’s Jack Sigrist (Wichita State) walked, then Nelson Vera doubled. With two outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Mayfield got a fly ball to end the inning. Still 0-0.

In the top of the fifth, Marcus got the leadoff man on base and in scoring position with no outs. But Hattrup went strikeout, ground ball, strikeout to end the inning. Still 0-0.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, with two outs and nobody on Plano West’s Pearce Priebe singled to right field. After a walk and an HBP loaded the bases for the Wolves, Alec Buonasera sent a line drive double down the right field line, scoring all three runners.

Marcus was not done though, in the top of the seventh, Mitchell Dickson doubled to start the inning, then Demitri Petrides reached on a catcher’s interference call, bringing the tying run to the plate with no outs. But West’s starter Jack Hattrup got a pop up and a double play ground ball to end the game, giving the Wolves a 3-0 victory in game one of a three game series. These two teams are scheduled to play today at Marcus HS, first pitch is slated for 7:30.
