COLLEYVILLE, TX - Colleyville Heritage and Grapevine split the first two games of a highly touted series between Top 10 teams in Texas. Which brought us to Saturday’s deciding game 3 tie-breaker. On the mound for Colleyville was 2017 RHP Michael Stanford, a Weatherford JC recruit. Grapevine sent starting shortstop, 2017 Boone Montgomery, a Texas-Arlington recruit, to the mound.

Grapevine’s Connor Neuman, a Louisiana Tech recruit, lead off the game with a solo home run to left field. Mustangs up 1-0. In the bottom of the first, sophomore and Oklahoma recruit, Bobby Witt Jr., tied the game for the Panthers when he launched a hanging breaking ball to left field for a home run. Witt Jr. is the No. 1 ranked player Texas and PBR 2019 Overall Rankings.

Both starters settled in for the next four innings, putting up zeros on the scoreboard. Colleyville went to the bullpen in the fifth inning, turning to right-hander Isaiah Alvarenga. In the top the sixth, Grapevine’s Neuman struck again, this time for a leadoff double down the third base line. After a sacrifice bunt moved Neuman to third, Boone Montgomery hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Neuman. Mustangs up 2-1.

In the top of the seventh, Grapevine would open the floodgates with four more runs. After Ryan Drake singled to left field, Colleyville Heritage brought shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. in to pitch. After a sacrifice bunt moved Drake into scoring position, catcher Jonathan Hearn hit a line shot down the rightfield line for a two-run home run. Mustangs up 4-1. Nicholas Pierce singled home the last of Grapevine’s runs to give the Mustangs a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Colleyville would not go quietly. Jacob Guerrero doubled with one out, and Bobby Witt Jr. reached on an HBP. After a groundout and an infield error, Colleyville had cut the lead to 6-3. Grapevine turned once again to senior Connor Neuman, who got a fly ball to end the game. Final Score Grapevine 6, Colleyville Heritage 3. With the win, Grapevine secures the #1 seed from District 8-5A.
