Texas Scout Blog: Week 3 Games

The Texas Scout Blog provides insider information and scouting notes from the Prep Baseball Scouting Staff during the season. This running blog will feature information on underclass prospects, unsigned seniors, draft prospects, and anything else that is notable. We will provide a wide range of information, including player evaluations, Video, Stats, and more. Below are the standout players from week 3 of the TX HS Baseball Season.

+ 2024 RHP Cooper Webb - Lake Travis

I saw Webb start for LT in a Thursday tournament game on a pitch count. He was efficient in his 2.2 IP allowing only 1 hit and striking out 6. He has a low effort delivery and seems to have more in the tank down the road from the 6’3” 180lb frame. Both breaking balls show traditional shape and he did not have to use the CH much in his short outing. The most impressive thing to me was his calm demeanor and mound presence, not just for a sophomore but for any class. Webb will be fun to follow as he continues to add strength in his next two years of HS ball.

+ 2025 RHP Nick Wesloski - McKinney Boyd - Uncommitted

Wesloski is a big RHP, at 6’3” 205 (7/26/23). He threw a CGSO where he topped 92mph with the fastball. He was mostly 87-89 and showed he could reach back for more late in the game. The SL ticked up late in the game as he started using it as his main out pitch. No extra curriculars from Wesloski, its all business when he toes the rubber. He struck out 7 in this outing but the opposing hitters were mostly outmatched.

This was my first time seeing Miller and the athleticism jumps out at you just as you see him in warmups. He is committed to Houston as a pitcher but I was impressed with his showing in the box and in the OF. He can really go and get it and has a good RH swing in the box. He had a 2B and a 3B in the game and really showed some power potential.

+ 2024 INF Rayner Heinrich - Leander Rouse - Tarleton Commit
Heinrich is not going to wow you with his height but he has a sturdy build and some serious poolside pop. He plays 2B for the Raiders and just looks like a ball player. The Tarleton commit is fun to watch as he is always hustling in the field and battling in the box. He certainly doesn’t get cheated either, taking big hacks consistently.

+ 2024 C Xander Forsell - Leander Rouse - Cisco College Commit

The Cisco College commit is a high level defender behind the dish. He receives, and blocks well to both sides. His arm is strong and accurate and he has a high baseball IQ. It is always important to have a good backstop if you want to go deep in the playoffs, and Rouse has that in Forsell.

+ 2024 RHP Blaze Milam - Liberty Hill - Grayson College Commit

Milam is a strike thrower that sits 85-87 mostly with the fastball and he reached back for 88 in the start I watched. He does a good job matching arm speed on the SL at 76-77, it is a good pitch and plays well off the FB. You can tell he loves to compete and wants the ball in the big games. The Grayson commit is a key piece and a leader for the Liberty Hill Panthers this season,

+ 2026 RHP Aiden Shreve - Pieper

Shreve has a frame to dream on at 6’4”, 190lb. The RHP was 85-88, T89 last week and the frame suggests more to come. The SL got whiffs at 72-74 and is developing into a quality secondary pitch. He went 5 innings and struck out 9, showing quiet confidence the whole time. He touched 89 late in the game which suggests he cruises at about 85%. It was good to see him in-game after he has showed well at previous events.

The OU recruit got the ball against the #1 team in the state on Thursday, and looked like the ace he was down the stretch during Pearland’s playoff run last year. He showed good fastball command to both sides of the plate, and his fastball sat in the upper 80’s and touched multiple 90’s.  Barfield also showed the ability to spin it, and he dropped his slider in for a strike and was able to bury it when ahead.  Barfield pitched with confidence and poise and looks ready to lead Pearland as they enter district play.

The uncommitted Jr. was a standout in January at our preseason ID event in Waco. The 6 ‘5 righty transferred to Mansfield for his junior season and got the start on Friday. He came out pounding the zone with an 88-90 mph fastball. He dominated early in the game with the fastball and then as the game went on he showed feel for his slider. It has a sweeper shape with big horizontal movement.  He got swings and misses out of the zone with it. Julius’s frame really projects and it is easy to envision the velocity to continue to trend up.

+ 2026 SS Grady Emerson - Argyle - TCU Commit

The #1 player in Texas had a good Friday evening in less than ideal weather.  The sweet swinging shortstop had 2 barrels in my viewing, with a 1B and then a 2B he smoked to deep center field. He continues to look more physical, but at the same time gaining foot speed.  He made a nice play coming in on a ball at short, and showed the ability to throw from different platforms. Emerson looks ready to lead the Eagles to another deep playoff run.

+ 2025 CF/QB1 Braxton Van Cleave - Mansfield - Kentucky Commit

The Kentucky commit showed his loud tools against premium velocity last Friday. He didn't have much to show for it but he handles low to mid 90's with ease, with a short but powerful stroke from the left side. Coming back from injury, we didn't have a chance to see his run tool, but it grades above avg when healthy. He is a fierce competitior, as evident by being a starting QB at the 6A level in Texas. He has a chance to be on of the big risers this Summer as MLB scouts turn their attention toward the '25 class.

The talented freshman came on in relief on Saturday to help Rockwall with a 1-0 victory of Celina.  Holt came in pounding the zone with a low to mid 80’s fastball that he showed good command of. He had the ability to consistently get to the glove side strike when he needed it.  The breaking ball flashed at times, and it will get better as he throws it with more power.  Holt competed and looked poised for a freshman in a 0-0 game. He is athletic and can play on the left side of the infield as well.

The newly uncommitted LHH 3rd baseman had a solid day for Celina on Saturday. He had multiple barrels and showed good athleticism throughout the day. He had multiple stolen bases and moved well while playing 3rd. His arm is plenty good to stay at 3rd at the next level, and he has the athleticism to maybe sneak in some 2nd as well.  Coon has quite a bit of upside left with a pretty good floor currently. He is going to be a good senior pickup for someone soon.

The Jr. righty shut down a very talented Rockwall lineup on Saturday. Boeckel didn’t overpower the lineup, but he showed the ability to command the fastball and also flashed a changeup that played really well off the heater. Broeckel generates weak contact, throws strikes, works quick, and keeps his defense engaged. He pitched with confidence, and as the velo continues to rise, so will his stock.

+ 2026 RHP Colby Brittain - Celina

The Sophomore righty got the start in game 1 for the Bobcats on Saturday and filled the zone up for 6 innings. He only allowed 1 free pass and pitched predominantly with a low to mid 80’s fastball. He didn’t give up any earned runs over 6 innings and only allowed 4 hits.  The breaking ball is avg. and needs more power, but it flashed a couple of times. Overall, a really good day for Brittain and he continues to trend in the right direction.
