Jupiter World Wood Bat Championships: 10-21-16

Cole Winn, RHP, 2018:  A Notre Dame recruit, who looks at least two inches taller on the mound than his listed 6-foot-1 with wide shoulders and long legs.  Winn squared off in the first inning against PBR’s number one overall 2018 OF Jarred Kelenic (West HS, WI), and after falling behind 2-0, came back for three straight strikes at 91, 90, and 92 to strike out the stellar Kelenic.  Winn sat 90-91 in the first while sprinkling in 92-93 to put hitters away from a high ¾ slot.  The wiry right-hander struck out eight in three innings of work allowing no hits and walking one.  Under the lights and watchful eyes of a sea of scouts, Winn’s electric arm ripped through a short arm stroke as he drove his front hip towards the plate.  While his fastball garnered whispers among the onlookers, it was his slider that drew a few gasps.  The pitch reached as high as 79 with tight, high spin rate, and was thrown for strikes in the zone, but used even more effectively to put away hitters outside of the zone.  Winn’s stuff was unquestionable on the night, and will stick in scout’s heads for a long time.

Caleb Sloan, RHP, 2017 (Regis Jesuit HS): Has a really good arm, 91-93, fastball, is fairly straight, which led to some barrels dropped. 6-foot-3, 215-pound TCU recruit, came out of the gates hot for Mountain West Slammers against the Braves Scout Team, sitting 91-93 in the first inning. Sloan struck out a pair in the first on 92 and 93 fastballs and yielded a hit, but his control began fade in the second inning and the loaded Braves Scout Team pushed across three runs in the second.

Tanner O’Tremba, OF, 2018: (Cherry Creek HS) Takes man hacks. Long swing, but makes consistent contact against good pitching. Significant bat speed no doubt. Barreled a few balls with no results. One deep to warning track. Committed to Texas Tech after the tournament and will be a perfect fit. Freakish athletic skills for body type.

Jack Winkler, SS, 2017
(Chatfield HS, CO) Played for Mountain West Slammers. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Winkler moves with fluidity and rhythm, as he made several athletic plays Thursday. He showed above-average arm strength (81 across the infield at a past PBR event) and the ability to throw from multiple angles. Offensively, he has an athletic, relaxed approach in the box. Committed to San Fransisco after tournament.

Matt Givin, RHP, 2017 (Rock Canyon HS) on the Mountain West Slammers. Athletic 6-foot-2, 180 pound frame. Can really spin a breaking ball. 76-79 CB, very good pitch, tight sharp break. Solid athlete, fastball 86-88. Kind of a tilt-a-wheel delivery. Committed to Xavier.

Colorado Sate Playoffs: 5-20 - 5-21

Connor Nantkes, LHP/OF, Cherokee Trail, 2017
You can argue that Nantkes has been the best pitcher in the state at the 5A level going down the stretch. On Friday he dominated Rocky Mountain, a team who participated in the NHSI and  had not been shut out all year. Nantkes went 7 innings and only gave up 2 hits and struck out 6. Fastball lived between 82 and 84 mph. Below is comments from our last event we had Nantkes at.

A 6-foot-2, 180-pound left hand hitting 1B/LHP who ran a 7.30 60.  Balanced at the plate with a quick stride and load.  Weight transfers forward on the swing and he shows good extension out front.  Swing stays level and he lives in the gaps.  Showcased a 92 MPH exit velocity.  Athletic in the field at first base with good feet and instincts.  He moves well on balls to his glove side and delivers from a high ¾ arm angle.  He showcased an accurate 82 MPH arm across the diamond.  On the mound he starts slightly closed and gets good balance and drive to the plate.  He lands in-line with the plate and falls off to the third base side on his finish.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot and features an 85 MPH fastball with slight tail and a 70 MPH curve with sharp break.  He finished his showcase with a 74 MPH change that moves into the right hand hitter.  Identified as the best two way talent 2017 at this event.

Tanner O'Tremba, OF/RHP, Cherry Creek, 2018
The No. 1 overall 2018 Otremba has taken Cherry Creek and put them on his shoulders. He has been a one man wrecking crew at the plate. In the 5A district playoffs the weekend before O'Tremba helped Cherry Creek win both district games by going 5 for 7 with a double, HR, and 4 RBI's. The homerun in the first inning was off an 87 mph fastball and set the tone against the No. 2 overall seed Regis Jesuit. Cherry Creek won both games 11-0. O'Tremba carried his momentum to this past weekend by going 5 for 9 with 6 RBI's and another homerun to lead Cherry Creek to the 5A Final Four. A 6-foot-6, 220-pound right hand hitting 1B/RHP who ran a 7.56 60.  Tall and athletic at the plate.  Hits from a balanced stance with a short stride and quick hand load.  Gets good extension through the zone and shows good pull power.  Lower half drives through the zone and he hits off a firm front side.  He showcased a 100 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he shows good range in the hole and a quick transfer when turning a double play.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot and delivered a 77 MPH ball across the diamond.  Identified with the most raw power 2016 at this event.

Holden Bernhardt, LHP, Mountain View, 2016 (Colorado Mesa)
This is the first time we have had an opportunity to see Bernhardt and we left extremely impressed. 6-foot, 150 pound LHP. He attacked Air Academy hitters with an 82 to 86 mph fastball and was still at 85 in the 6th inning. 3/4 arm slot. Falls off tho 3rd base side. Curveball was 70-72 with late sharp break. Final line on the game was 5 and 2/3 innings giving up 4 hits and had 11 strikeouts.

Keven Mackintosh, LHP, Cherokee Trail, 2016 (Lamar CC)
Mackintosh had a great weekend on the mound. The 6-foot lefty threw against Cherry Creek leading Cherokee Trail into the 5A state championship game. Final line on the day was 6 innings giving up 3 runs striking out 6. Fastball was touching 83 mph. Below is comments on Mackintosh from a previous event this spring.

A 6-foot-0, 205-pound left hand pitcher who stands tall on the mound and falls forward after balance.  He lands in-line with the plate and come across his body slightly on the follow through.  Arm slot is high ¾ and arm speed is good on all three pitches.  Fastball was 81 MPH with good run away.  He showed good command of the zone with a 70 MPH curve with sweeping break and a 74 MPH change that lived away from the hitter.

Jerome Bohannon, LHP/OF, Cherokee Trail, 2016 (Metropolitan State)

The Cougar receive some unexpected power from Bohannon hitting 2 homeruns out of the 9 hole against Cherry Creek and Dakota Ridge. Bohannon drove in 5 of his 10 RBI's this season. On the mound he pounded the strike zone against Dakota Ridge giving up 1 earned run in 5 innings striking out 7. Below is comments on Bohannon from an event this spring.

A 6-foot-0, 170-pound left hand hitting LHP/OF who ran a 6.96 60.  On the mound he stands tall and gets good balance.  Falls to the plate and lands in-line, finish takes him to the third base side.  Delivery is over the top with good arm speed on all three pitches.  Fastball touched 87 with good command away.  He also showcased a 70 MPH curve with sharp break and a 67 MPH change.  At the plate he is balanced with a high leg kick and long stride.  Good weight transfer and extension out front produced an 84 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he moves well and uses quick feet and transfer to get rid of the ball.  He displayed an 85 MPH arm with accuracy.
