Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Ridgefield, WA - This past summer was our first opportunity to scout the Pacific Northwest as well as run our own showcases. Our showcases work in tandem with our scouting efforts to help give us a thorough understanding of the baseball talent across the state.

In this article, we take a look back at 4 profiles from our Pacific Northwest ID event.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST ID STATISTICAL RELEASE

Harrison Brandell SS / 3B / Oregon City, OR / 2022

Tall, upright stance in the box. Feet square to the pitcher. Widens out into more athletic base after short, quick leg kick. Hands stay loaded near back shoulder. Uses minimal hand load to initiate swing. Works short, direct to the ball while keep barrel tight to body. High, one-handed finish thru contact. Feet stay active on defense with short, choppy lateral steps. Keeps ball centered, funneling into core before exchange. Short, compact arm action. Gets the ball out quickly. Releases from a low ¾ arm slot. Handled double-play feeds from both 3B & SS effectively. Overall, flashed control of a consistent glove hand from the left-side of the INF.

Kade Weeks SS / RHP / McMinnville, OR / 2022

Hitting/Defense: Starts in wide, athletic base with front foot slightly open. Starts with slight knee bend and weight shifted onto backside. Rocks back to load while creating rhythm between upper and lower half. Hands stay tight to body, keeping barrel inside of the ball. Showed best contact to middle of the field. Heads stays down thru contact. Creates some leverage by finishing with tall, upright posture. Defensively, sinks hips to get low while funneling ball in. Smooth, easy strides while moving laterally. Maintains body control throughout, doesn’t rush the play. Clean, loose arm action with some whip after low ¾ release. Accurate throws with consistent carry to the target.

Pitching: Works from the far, 1st base side of the rubber. Simple, controlled delivery with deliberate tempo throughout. Slight bend on backside as he gets into leg lift. Weight stays gathered over rubber while he separates hands down center of body. Glove side stays level with lead shoulder as he gets down the slope. Slight cross action at landing. Full arm swing but avoids wrapping the ball behind him. High ¾ release with tall finish. FB shows consistent downward angle with occasional arm side run. Found the bottom of the zone with his CH, flashing some late fade as it gets to the catcher. Flashed 11/5 breaking ball as well for his 3rd offering.

Lucas Wear C / 2B / Lake Oswego, OR / 2021

Sets up with feet outside of shoulder width, square alignment to the pitcher. Barrel rests just above back shoulder with flat angle before hands load. Takes short, quick step forward while head and upper body remain quiet. Showed a line-drive approach in BP with some lift to his pull-side. High, 2-handed finish thru contact. Stays tall as he rotates against firm front leg. Presents a low, compact target behind the dish. Hips work below the ball while he maintains upright posture. Quickly gets out of stance into throwing motion. Athleticism translates well to C position. Aligns front side with target as he exchanges ball down center of chest. High ¾ release point. Put the ball around the bag on all throws down to 2b

Tucker Zander SS / RHP / Pendleton, OR / 2021

Hitting/Defense: Relaxed set-up in the box with tall, balanced posture. Hands load with short, quick move as he takes forward stride into a wider hitting base. Short, compact swing with uphill path thru the zone. Gap-to-gap power type of approach. High 2 handed-finish. Creates leverage as he rotates against a firm front leg. Defensively, showed sound & active footwork at SS. Stays wide as ball approaches then works to get slightly around ball and funnel just inside of his glove-side leg. Adjusts feet quickly to get alignment towards target. Bent, compact arm action with ¾ release. Keeps momentum behind throws. Overall, showed sure-handed glove actions with consistent body control.

Pitching: Works from the center of the rubber with a quick paced delivery. Stays tall on backside as he drives lead leg up to about chest height. Creates some drop & drive action in his motion at hand break but keeps shoulders flat/level to target. Stays in line with target as front foot gets into landing. Arm path stays short with constant bend as he gets into high ¾ release point. Shows some extension with upper body out over front leg at release. Keeps eyes on target throughout. FB stays true out of hand. CB has plenty of 11/5 shape & his shows some feel for keeping it down in the zone. CH has tough downward angle with late, fading action.
