The summer 2018 Western Pennsylvania Showcase event schedule continued on July 24th with the Western Pennsylvania Summer Review at Kelly Automotive Park in Butler, PA. Prospects gathered to put themselves on the recruiting radar by participating in a showcase workout followed by a nine inning game. Today we analyze the attendees from the Class of 2019.

Top Prospects

Ryan Meneskie, 2019, Moon Area, C/2B

7/24/18 Defensively as catcher, glove hand is soft and confident. Presents soft wall in blocking while staying square and maintaining proper trunk angle. Feet and arm stroke are quick. Transfer is clean and arm was accurate in recording pop time of 2.15 on throws of 68 mph out of the crouch.

As middle infielder, hands are soft and confident in funneling. There is subtle tendency to work top down and let the ball get deep. Transfer is clean. Arm is accurate and throwing motion has length on throws of 76 mph across the diamond.

Offensively, 5-foot-9, 165-pound right-handed hitter initiates swing from narrow, neutral set up with stride to closed. Separation is solid. Weight shift is aggressive followed by a slightly restricted hip turn in association with stride to closed. Bat is on plane early and maintained late in hitting zone. Excellent barrel feel was present with spraying of line drives to all fields during solid bp round. A bat exit velocity of 75 mph was registered. Meneskie singled and tripled in game action.

Tyler Yough, 2020, Karns City, SS/RHP

7/24/18 Defensively, actions in middle infield are athletic showing solid area quickness. Hands are soft and confident in funneling bottom up and out front. Transfer is clean and an accurate 76 mph arm was shown on throws across the diamond. 

Offensively, 5-foot-9, 175-pound right-handed hitter initiates swing from slightly open with heel raise and no stride staying open. Weight shift is passive followed by an aggressive hip turn. Hands are loose and work directly to the baseball. Barrel feel is demonstrated with squaring of multiple balls during round of BP. a bat exit velocity of 85 mph was registered.

Stephen O'Donnell, 2019, Karns City, SS/C

7/24/18 Defensively as middle infielder, flashes solid range and area quickness. Hands are soft and confident in funneling bottom up and out front. O'Donnell would benefit from maintaining a wider base in fielding and working through the ball more aggressively.

Offensively, 5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitter initiates swing from slightly closed set up with controlled stride staying closed. Separation is adequate. There is balance and rhythm with solid barrel feel. Hands are loose and work directly to the baseball. A 77 mph bat exit velocity was registered. O'Donnell recorded two hits in game play including a triple to deep left-center field.  

Jacob Weckerly, 2019, Karns City, C/OF

7/24/18 Defensively as catcher, flashes solid hip flexibility in providing low, wide target. Glove hand is soft and quiet in receiving and framing. Presents soft wall in blocking while staying square and maintaining appropriate trunk angle. a 2.20 pop time was registered on throw of 74 mph out of the crouch.

Offensively, 6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitter initiates swing from neutral set up with lift and replace stride. Weight shift is passive followed by an aggressive hip turn into a firm front side. There is limited backside release. A bat exit velocity of 83 mph was registered.  

Kyle Weitzel, 2019, Buter Area, OF/LHP

7/24/18 Defensively, gets behind ball and catches at it's height. Shows proper technique in playing through the ball on the ground while registering 71 mph arm strength on throws from the OF. 

Offensively, 6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitter initiates swing from neutral set up with subtle knee to knee movement and stride to neutral. Early hand leak reduces separation. Back elbow drift in front of hands lends to bat drag. There is balance and rhythm. A bat exit velocity of 79 mph was registered.

On the mound, left-hander works out of high 3/4 arm slot showing ability to repeat low effort delivery. Fastball sat 72-75 in game action flashing intermittent arm side run. Curveball at 63-65 showed 1-7 shape and rolling action.
