Earlier in the offseason, Virginia/DC Scouting Director Jason Burton got the chance to chat with Miller School Head Coach and retired 7-time MLB All-Star Billy Wagner.

Wagner is a Tazewell High School alum who was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 1st Round out of Ferrum College. He went on to have a very successful 16 year MLB career before retiring after the 2010 season.

In the spring of 2011, Wagner took over as the Head Baseball Coach at the Miller School of Albemarle. With him at the helm, the Mavericks have become a perennial power first in VISAA II, and then recently in VISAA I. Miller School has made at least the State Semifinals every year since 2014, capturing three straight VISAA II State Championships in 2017-2019.
