The Salem Spartans advanced in the VHSL Class 4 quarterfinal today, downing a good Woodgrove Wolverines team by the score of 7-2.

Lefty Sophomore Zian Honaker got the start for Salem and had an uneven first inning. Honaker struck out the first two Wolverines he faced, but then Justin Hanvey doubled and that was followed with a home run Brady Drawbaugh, staking the visitors a quick two run advantage.

In the bottom of the frame the Spartan's took charge of the game. The speedy Jacob Fetrow singled and quickly stole second and the Spartans superb shortstop Joe Quinn, doubled to left field scoring Fetrow. C Matt Wright was hit by pitch and moved to second on a ground ball. Hunter Clifton's two out base hit scored Quinn and Wright, and the Spartan's would never lose the lead in the game again.

Fetrow lead off the third inning and reached on an error. He then stole second and scored on base hit by Wright. Honaker settled down from his twenty-six pitches in the first, was strong for nearly the rest of the contest.

The Spartan's struck again in the home fourth. Austin Sowers walked to start the inning, Honaker singled to right field. Both runners engineered a double steal, and Fetrow scored both runners, and Salem was ahead 6-2.

Salem added a run in the sixth on a walk, with an outfield error. Honaker pitched a gritty five and two third inning and was relieved by righty Caleb Lingenfelter, who made quick work of the Wolverines, tossing eight pitches, blanking the four batters he faced.
