Thursday saw Riverbend travel to Mountain View as both teams wrapped up their regular season Commonwealth District play. Riverbend started sophomore righty Luke Alexander and View went with senior righty CJ Sword (Virginia Wesleyan). Mountain View had a rough defensive first inning, committing three errors around a Sword BB and HBP, allowing Riverbend to open up an early 3-0 lead. The Bears added two more in the second and the Wildcats scratched a run in the bottom half, after two the score was 5-1.

Freshman Weston Yount replaced Sword in the middle innings and was able to hold the Riverbend offense in check for a bit. Mountain View cut it to 7-3 after four. Riverbend would eventually blow it open in the fifth and sixth, with the big blow coming on a 3-run home run from Tyler Benick, which made the score 11-3.

Mountain View started a comeback in the bottom of the sixth, halving the deficit to 11-7, but Riverbend senior Billy Fluharty (Bucknell) came in from short in the seventh to close the game out.

Luke Alexander RHP / Riverbend, VA / 2025

Alexander is 6-1 with a lankier athletic frame, has some projection left to it. Drives down the mound with some push off his back side, strides outs with closed shoulders and screws into an open landing. Longer arm action that is loose and quick, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot. Has some rhythm early that builds to explosive intent at the end of his delivery. Fastball was 83-84 with some ride up in the zone and a bit of late armside run. He held that velocity pretty much the entire outing, and he pitched into the 6th inning and around 100 pitches. Primary offspeed was a curveball that was 70-72, pitch took him a few innings to find but he did start landing it in the 4th or so. Has 11/5 shape with sharp break to it, sharpens and looks better when its thrown glove side down. Also showed a few change-ups that were 77-78 with a bit of late fade to them. Overall, it felt like his control and feel were a bit off on the night, he stayed in the pen trying to find his breaking ball pregame. I like the raw stuff and he has a chance to keep adding some velocity. I also liked how he kept battling and found a way to get outs when he didn't have his breaking ball early and his fastball feel was a bit off, showed some moxie. He was really good in the fourth and fifth when he started landing the breaking ball, and flashed the ability to dominate. Lot of upside in the arm, he's going to be a pretty good one.

Matthew McCauley LHP / 1B / Mountain View (Stafford), VA / 2026

McCauley is one of the most interesting 2026 two-way prospects in Northern Virginia. He has become a two-way contributor for MV as the season has gone on, being a regular in the lineup and throwing out of the bullpen for them. In this game, we saw him at the plate and he had a pair of hits, both pull side line drives. He has a tall lanky frame with a lot of projection left and a bunch of room to add strength to his frame. Hits from the right side from a taller open relaxed stance, simple set-up with a short stride and load, hips fire completely and he maintains a firm base through contact. Hands stay tight and inside to contact then he extends through the ball, path is slightly uphill and he shows line drive gap power all ways and can access a bit more to his pull side. Chance to continue to develop more power and is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Weston Yount LHP / Mountain View, VA / 2026

Yount has an athletic frame, and like his older brother has become an early contributor for Mountain View on the mound. There is some strength in his lower half, he engages it early in his delivery, which is drop and drive, he strides out closed and creates some classic lefty cross fire. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, very short on his backside arm action, with a loose arm stroke. Fastball was 76-78, touching 79 once early, generates downward angle from his slot and he also gets some late armside run to the pitch. Curveball had good armspeed at 66-67 and sharp bigger 1/7 break to it. Pitch has some shape and the potential to tighten up nicely as he continues to develop.
