On Wednesdays this spring, NOVA Scouting Coordinator John Nolan will post videos his scouting notes on players that stood from his last week of coverage of the 2024 High School season.

This week will feature players from Battlefield, Fauquier, Kettle Run, St. John's, St. Paul VI, and Tuscarora.

Battlefield

Garrett Camp 3B / RHP / Battlefield , VA / 2026

Camp started the game on the infield but came into close it out for Battlefield. He has an athletic 6-0 frame. He has a simple, drop and drive delivery, works on line to slightly closed with downhill shoulders. He throws with a short quick arm action from a lower three-quarters arm slot. Fastball on the night was 80-82, touching 83, showed a bit of late armside run to it and he threw the pitch to both sides of the plate. The breaking ball is a showstopper, pitch was 69, only threw it twice but both essentially fooled the plate ump. Pitch spun up to 3000 RPM at Preseason All-State and has sharp 11/5 break with some shape to it. It has a chance to be really good pitch.

Chase Colangelo SS / RHP / Battlefield, VA / 2027

Colangelo is a Virginia Tech commit and has gotten a lot more physical since that picture of him from the Junior Future Games in 2022. An athletic frame with some good strength in the lower half. He has a very simple lefthanded set-up and is quiet to contact. Very short to ball, hits contact point with a good base and gets extension through the ball. Shows a gap to gap approach right now, slightly uphill path which leads to extra bases, has a chance to access some real power as he learns to turn on the ball. Very mature at-bats early in the game against tough senior lefty and fellow future Hokie Brendan Cowen.

Teagan Leach LHP / 1B / Battlefield, VA / 2027

Leach is a Virginia Tech commit and had a quieter night at the plate, but he did have some good deep at-bats against Cowen. Leach also made his first high school start on the mound. He has a physical strong athletic frame. Very simple delivery and has a very very short arm action after initially stabbing a bit longer. Throws from a low-three quarters arm slot, quick arm action, ball comes out of his hand easy. His fastball was 83-84, touching 86, and he held that 83-84 range through all four innings. Pitch gets late armside run that has some depth to it as well. Breaking ball had slider shape to it, especially when thrown to lefties, shape was a bit more slurvey backdoor to righthanders. It has late sharp action and good armspeed and was 73. Its hell on lefties and flashes swing and miss when buried away from them. He struck out 8 in 4 innings while allowing just one hit and one walk. Leach is a bat-first prospect at the moment, but being a lefthanded pitcher, legitimate two-way is very much on the table for him as we move forward.

Nico Moritz-Toledo OF / RHP / Battlefield, VA / 2027

Moritz-Toledo is a Virginia Tech commit and manned centerfield on the evening. He has some range out there and his speed shows defensively, especially when combined with his good breaks. Tough weather night with rainfall on and off through the game that caused some outfield misplays on the other side, but it did not impact him. Offensively, he is a lefthanded hitter and was in the leadoff spot for Battlefield. Had an infield single in the first, fighting a pitch into play just past the mound and beating it out without much doubt. He is a nightmare on the bases and has a significant impact on his opponent when he is there. He has speed and gets good reads and breaks. His swing is short and slightly uphill, and he shows a gap to gap approach with some present extra base power.

Luke Raflo C / 3B / Battlefield, VA / 2027

Josh Weppner RHP / OF / Battlefield, VA / 2026

Fauquier

Matthew Graham C / 1B / FAUQUIER HIGH, VA / 2025

Eli Rittenhouse 2B / SS / Fauquier, VA / 2025

Rittenhouse has an athletic 5-9 frame with some strength present. An athletic mover with some speed once he gets going. Offensively, he has a shorter line drive swing with a slightly uphill path. Shows a gap to gap approach with some barrel feel, took good at-bats during he game. Keeps things simple and tries to line gaps, and then is aggresive on the bases, stretching this line-drive into a double by forcing action in a tie game.

Kettle Run

Bo Finkbeiner 1B / 3B / Fauquier, VA / 2026

Sam Linebaugh OF / Kettle Run, VA / 2025

Jacob Mulhern RHP / OF / Kettle Run, VA / 2025

Mulhern is 5-9 with a lankier athletic frame that still has room to add strength to it. He throws from a high three-quarters slot, easily repeatable delivery, short loose quick easy arm action. Showed three pitches on the night and was dominant early, punching out four in a perfect first two innings and six overall. Got swings and misses on fastball and both breaking balls. Fastball was 80-82, touching 83 with some late run to armside that also has a bit of two-plane action. Its a slider and curveball, the slider running in the 73-74 range with hard late downer action. Curveball is a tick slower with bigger sharp 11/5 break. Showed feel for changing speeds and spots with them. Also showed a change-up or two. Mulhern knows how to pitch and keep hitters off balance and is starting his second year as Kettle Run's top arm, so he is a guy who will have a lot of big game experience when he gets to the next level.

Logan Overhulser OF / OF / Kettle Run , VA / 2024

St. John's

Clayton Armah RHP / 3B / St. John's College, VA / 2025

Armah is an Auburn commit and has a tall lanky frame that has projection left on it. On the mound, drop and drive delivery, throws from a three-quarters slot with a slightly closed off front side. Short loose quick arm action, velocity comes easy out of his hand. Fastball was 87-88, touching 90 one time in the first inning. Pitch has some boring action on it and a bit of depth. Slider was 74-76 with good armspeed and late hard 10/4 action to it. Had a tough first inning but did a good job of continuing to battle through it and had a strong second and third. The breaking ball got swing and misses inside and outside of the zone has the makings of a good pitch.

Offensively, Armah hit in the three hole for St. John's and has a balanced set-up. He has a short swing, keeps his hands inside the ball. Its a level swing and gap to gap approach with some batspeed and some whip in the bat. Currently a line-drive hitter that will line some gaps but there is a ton more in the tank as he fills out and starts driving balls to all fields, especially pull side.

Mason Bodnar C / C / St. John's college, VA / 2024

Ben Christine RHP / RHP / St. Johns College High School, VA / 2024

Nate Hawton-Henley OF / SS / St. John's, VA / 2025

Hawton-Henley is a Maryland commit. Athletic frame, kid is a twitchy athlete with some real footspeed and as he runs. Hits from a relaxed open stance, short very very quick swing, bat is moving and gives him more reaction time, hands are a big part of that for him. Mostly level line drive swing, prefers and up the middle approach and can hammer balls into the gaps with some power. Also can use the whole field, preference is to put it in play and use his speed as a weapon.

Marcus Martin SS / RHP / St. John's College, VA / 2024

Martin is a High Point commit. Athletic frame, simpler delivery that is closed off with a bit of crossfire. Short arm action from a high three-quarters slot, has some effort in the delivery but the ball jumps out of his hand. Fastball was 88-90, touching 91 twice in his inning, pitch has some downward plane and a bit of armside bore. Gives up a lot of velo in the stretch, working 84-85 there. The breaking ball was 70-74 with slurvy 11/5 break. He was much much more comfortable in the windup than the stretch. Reliever profile here and the stuff is something to work with.

Breyden Ruiz-Weiss OF / LHP / St. John's College, VA / 2024

St. Paul VI

Mattox Flatt C / SS / Paul VI, VA / 2024

Ryan Henson 1B / RHP / Paul VI, VA / 2024

Alex Pearce OF / RHP / Paul VI Catholic , VA / 2025

Alexander Peltier OF / Paul VI, VA / 2024

Carter Perdue RHP / 3B / Paul VI, VA / 2026

Tyler Russ RHP / 1B / Paul VI, VA / 2024

Jackson Sirois SS / 2B / Paul VI, VA / 2024

Tuscarora

Brendan Cowen LHP / LHP / Tuscarora, VA / 2024

Cowen is a Super 60 alum and a Virginia Tech commit. He has an athletic 6-3, 199 pound frame with a long wingspan. Longer arm break and action that tightens up during his arm stroke, throws from a very low slot with a crossfire delivery and some very closed off shoulders, creates a ton of deception and creates a tough angle on his pitches, especially for lefthanders. Fastball was 87-88 in the first, mostly sitting 88, before settling into 86-88 that he held through the outing. Pitch has heavy late sink with some armside run, movement really plays up down in the zone. Slider was 78-81 and he had trouble landing it for strikes in the first two innings, but started finding it in later frames. Pitch tunnels well off his fastball and has late hard sweep to it. Also mixed in a change-up later in the outing that drew some swing and miss. Ultimately, Cowen had a tough time in the first inning finishing batters, with the breaking ball missing just off the zone, and he ran his pitch count up quickly. His defense didn't help him throughout the outing as the weather played an impact there. He did strike out 10 in four innings and looked better later in the game.

JJ Mitchell OF / RHP / Tuscarora , VA / 2026

Connor Quill 3B / SS / Tuscarora , VA / 2026

Quill is a Virginia Tech commit. He has an athletic 6-2 frame and he has added some good strength during the offseason, especially to his lower half. He has a short, quick swing, good balance at contact point and strength at contact with extension through the ball. Slightly uphill path, has traditionally been a gap to gap line drive hitter with doubles power but has worked on turning on the ball, and when he does, he can lift and launch. Quieter night at the plate in the game, struck out both times against Leach, fell behind in both counts being aggressive on fastballs early, then got beat by tough sliders down. Did pick up a hit in his third at-bat, I put it out on social but didn't put on his profile because he caught it way off the end of the bat. It was an 0-2 pitch and he was early on it but got just enough barrel on the ball to muscle it into centerfield for a single. A lot to like here and the bat is his calling card.
