St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute 5 -  St. Mary’s 1

On a night that saw extreme low temperatures, high winds, and a rain/snow mix, two solid teams from western New York squared off at St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute.  On a day that was the furthest thing from pitcher friendly, the pitchers showed great mental toughness in braving the elements to throw great games.

For St. Joes, RHP and Niagara University commit Tyler Howard took the mound.  Howard threw a complete game allowing only 1 run which came in the first inning.  After that, Howard cruised through the next 6 innings showing a good mix of 3 pitches.  Though the fastball didn’t have as much life as expected due to the elements, he showed good command of a straight change as well as a late breaking curve.  On the mound for St. Mary’s was Alex Bish, an intriguing young lefty.  Bish showed great potential battling a very tough Marauders lineup and did not allow a run until the 4th inning.  Sophomore Zach Penksa came in to finish out the rest of the game from the 4th on allowing only 1 run.  The St. Mary's pitching staff has a lot to be excited about for a few years to come.

Though not an overly exciting day offensively, both teams showed lineups with the potential to have breakout games at any time this season.  In the top of the 1st Jr. first baseman Chris Gresham hit a broken bat double to score Senior Chris Nowak.  After the pitchers battled it out for the next few frames, St. Joes came up in the 4th and got a rally started when David Archer laid down a base hit bunt.  The next batter then laid down another bunt which was misplayed putting two runners aboard.  A past ball scored the first run for the Marauders followed by a bleeding RBI single to right field over the infielders who were playing in to cut off a potential run at the plate.    Next Junior Outfielder Garrett Baugher smoked an RBI line drive to center.   Baugher showed well above average speed on the base paths as well as standout defensive qualities in the outfield.  In the top of the 5th St. Mary’s tried to answer back with a rally of their own started off by a leadoff triple from sophomore catcher Joe Barberio.  With bases loaded Senior Mercyhurst University commit Matt Schneider lined out to left, when Barberio tried to tag from third he was thrown out by a perfect throw from Baugher in left.  Fly out and throw out put the dagger in the hopes of a rally for St. Mary’s.  Patrick Judge added an RBI double in the 6th as well.

Despite the freezing cold and wet playing conditions these two teams managed to play some good baseball and show a lot of good signs of things to come for both programs.  Each team had a handful of players to keep an eye on moving forward, especially as the weather warms and these two teams get some more games under their belt.  They should have another matchup later in the season which is sure to be good baseball.
