WISCONSIN DELLS, WI – The Woodside High School Challenge continued on Saturday with a total of 24 games on the schedule. We moved over to the Wisconsin Dells complex on Day 2 where we saw eight games in total. We’ll do our best to give you a quick snapshot of what we saw in each game today at in the Dells.

Wausau East 5, Wausau West 3
In the crosstown Wisconsin Valley matchup, East outlasted West 5-3 in eight innings. Tied 3-3 after five innings of play, it would stay that way until the eighth when East scored a pair of runs to take the 5-3 lead.  Ben Schubring got the big hit in the eighth with an RBI double scoring Luke Strick who got things started with a single. Strick was also East’s winning pitcher as he worked all eight innings striking out seven, allowing five hits and one earned run.

Menomonie 9, No. 11 Stoughton 6
Menomonie’s Terrin Vavra had a day for the Mustangs, the Unsigned Senior shortstop went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and then closed things down for Menomonie on the mound, nailing down the 9-6 win.

Wausasu West 7, Menomonie 2
Sophomore Logan Grunewald pitched a gem for the Warriors. Grunewald fired a complete game striking out five over seven innings. The game stayed close for six innings as the Warriors took a 3-2 lead into the seventh. West broke it open thanks to senior Kyle McMullen who crushed a bases loaded double that scored all three. McMullen finished with a pair of double son the day, scoring three times and driving in three.

St. Louis Park (MN) 11, Wausau East 10
Runs were plentiful in the Lumberjacks second game of the day but ended up losing the shootout 11-10 to St. Louis Park from Minnesota. St. Louis Park jumped out to an early 8-2 lead after three and held it the rest of the way. However Wausau East did not go quietly, facing a seven run deficit in their last at bats, the Lumberjack rallied for six runs coming up one run shy of sending another game into extras. East’s Jordan Heiting led the way with three hits and three runs scored.

No. 14 Eau Claire North 6, No. 11 Stoughton 1
In Stoughton’s last game of the weekend, we got our first look at freshman Dillon Nowicki in game action. Nowicki got the ball with hopes of getting Stoughton in the W column, but Eau Claire North sent their ace Adam LaRock to the hill who teamed up with Lucas Lanners to scatter just four hits and a 6-1 victory. Nowicki gave up three runs in three innings of his first varsity start, the freshman showed dominant stuff at times striking out four of his 12 outs, but wound up on the losing end. LaRock helped his own cause with a booming RBI double in the third. Kyle Balash added a two RBI triple in the fourth.

Marshfield 11, Eau Claire Memorial 8
After getting our first look at the Old Abes yesterday, they definitely pass the eye test, but Marshfield was not intimidated by their counterpart and came out swinging, tallying 8 runs in the first three innings, a deficit Memorial could't surpass. Cameron Swanson drove in three RBI on one hit while Jack Donahue led the Marshfield offense with a 3-for-4 day scoring twice and driving in two.

Eau Claire Memorial 6, St. Louis Park (MN) 1
Junior LHP Storm Standiford was masterful on the mound for Eau Claire Memorial. Standiford used a baffling fastball/changeup mix that kept hitters off balance all day and proved highly efficient, getting easy outs early in counts. Standiford struck out five, allowing just two hits and walking one. Memorial busted it open with a five run fifth inning. Eli Traaseth went 2-for-3 with a run scored leading the offense.

Marshfield 6, No. 14 Eau Claire North 2
Marshfield only managed one hit off of the Huskies pitching but mustered 6 runs winning 6-2. Marshfield took advantage of eight free passes from North pitching, five walks in the final frame added three insurance runs for Marshfield.
