Lincoln Park Wins District Championship Behind Sophomore Shortstop Calise

Doug Freeman
Florida Executive Director

Lincoln Park took on Labelle in the 5a District 13 Regional Championship in Ft Piece last night, with 2019 Florida recruit Tyler Nesbitt on the mound for Labelle and 2021 FAU recruit Maxwell Mortzolf getting the call for Lincoln Park.

Both pitchers came out strong early as the two would combine for 10 strikeouts through three innings. Nesbit, a very projectable and athletic right-hander, attacked mostly with his fastball that ranged from 87-91 mph and worked on a downhill plane. His go-to offspeed pitch early was a fading changeup at 84-85 mph and flashed an occasional above average slider at 81-83 mph.

Mortzolf is more of a stocky body, but showed advanced feel for his age. The left-hander worked from a 3/4 slot with a loose arm and attached hitters at 80-83 mph with some arm side run. He also showed a feel for a changeup at 75 mph and an occasional slider.

Lincoln Park would strike first as the talented sophomore shortstop and Florida commit, Braden Calise, would lead off the fourth with a single followed by a single from 2020 Texas Tech commit Drew Stubbs. Despite Calise being thrown out on a steal/bunt attempt, Carlos Vega would pick up Lincoln Park, crushing a double to deep center, driving in the first run of the game.

Labelle would answer right back though, as Dillion White would leadoff the top of the fifth with a double and would be driven in from a line-drive single from Jacksonville recruit Trace Burchard. Burchard also stood out behind the plate the entire game, as he showed advanced receiving and blocking skills throughout the night.

Lincoln Park answered though in the bottom of the fifth, after a pair of leadoff walks, Calise would drive a pitch to deep center for a two-run double and would score on a double from Mortzolf, giving Lincoln Park a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Dillion Villa would leadoff the sixth with a double and be driven in Davion Blanco’s double, but back-to-back-to-back flyouts ended the threat in the sixth. Calise, who entered in relief to induce those flyouts, would then shut the door in the seventh and seal the District Championship for Lincoln Park.
