Trinity, FL - Last night featured a matchup of No. 14 in our Power25 rankings George Jenkins traveling to take on bubble team Mitchell. Both teams are filled with talented arms and depth in their lineups. This game was a pitching duel for most of the night with 2022 Miami commit Ashton Crowther getting the start for Mitchell and 2022 Jacksonville commit Aidan Kelley getting the start for George Jenkins.

Crowther would go 5 innings for the Mustangs. The 6-foot-4 southpaw sat 87-90 with his fastball and changed speeds with a 2-seam, slider, and changeup. He would allow 1 earned run on 2 hits with 9 strikeouts. He would allow 6 walks however.

On the other side,
Aidan Kelley went 6 innings for George Jenkins. He also sat 87-90 with his fastball and mixed an above average curveball that kept hitters guessing all game. He would allow 1 earned run on 2 hits while striking out 12.

Offense was scarce in this game with most runs resulting on errors. George Jenkins got on the board first as leadoff hitter
Horiam Santiago reached base and would score on an error. Mitchell tied things up in the 4th as Aidan Miller would reach on a walk, steal 2 bases, and score on an error.

George Jenkins would retake the lead in the 5th on a bases loaded walk, but a Logan Koslin RBI single would tie things back up for Mitchell. 2023 Trevor Harrison came in relief for Crowther and would throw 2 shutout innings. Richie Collazo would double in the 7th for George Jenkins but was left stranded at third to keep the score 2-2.

In the bottom of the 7th with 2nd and 3rd and 2 outs,  Zachary Crawford was up to bat. A wild pitch on a 3-2 count would bring home Chase Nystrom to score the winning run on a walk off. Mitchell would take this one 3-2 with Trevor Harrison getting the win in relief.

Scout Notes

2022 Ashton Crowther, LHP, Mitchell (Miami)

6-foot-4, 200 pound southpaw got the start for Mitchell. A highly touted prospect in the 2022 class had several scouts out to see him. Long lanky frame and comes from a ¾ arm slot. Worked a four pitch mix well that he used to change speeds on hitters. The 4-seam fastball sat 87-90 mph with spin rates in the 2400 rpms. He worked a 2-seam fastball that ran away from right handers at 84-86 mph and higher spin at 2500 rpm. His slider was sharp with sweeping action across the zone at 77-81 mph (2460 rpm). His last pitch is a hard fading changeup at 80-82 mph. Crowther has an impressive four pitch arsenal that is tough for hitters to pick up on. He would go 5 innings for Mitchell allowing 2 runs (1 earned). He allowed 2 hits with 9 strikeouts. He struggled with command a bit as he finished the game with 6 walks. The overall outlook on Crowther is impressive with his 6-foot-4 frame and ability to throw 4 different pitches for strikes.

2022 Aidan Kelley, RHP, George Jenkins (Jacksonville)

6-foot-2, 225 pound right hander. Strong athletic build on the mound. Worked stretch only and was quick to the plate. Quick arm from a high ¾ slot. Has a heavy running fastball at 87-90 mph with spin rates up to 2500 rpm. Kelley’s best pitch was his curveball. Showed sharp downhill action at 75-78 mph with spin rates up to 2650 rpm. Kelley would go 6 innings for George Jenkins. He allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits. He struck out 12 and allowed 2 runs over 6 innings. Kelley has the making of a top starting pitcher at the next level.
