South Summer Championships Day One Recap

On June 13th-16th, 2019 at the Baltimore Orioles complex at Twin Lakes Park, PBR Florida will host the 2019 South Summer Championships. This years event features 25+ teams in an underclass and upperclass division. The event will feature four pool play games for the upperclass division and three pool play games for the underclass division followed by single elimination bracket-play until the first champion is crowned. Today we take a look at some of the standouts from day one of the South Summer Championships.
SWFL Nation 2022
Jacob Smith RHP / 1B / Spanish River Community, FL / 2022Uncommitted 2022, tall, athletic frame at 6-2 180. Patient at the plate with good discipline. Quiet bat with a quick load and short stride. Easy level left-handed swing, showed a left-center approach with two doubles to that gap.

Dylan Mercer C / RHP / North Fort Myers, FL / 2022Uncommitted 2022, short, stocky catcher. Receives well and blocks behind the plate. Was able to steal some strikes with his framing ability. Offensively, he showed some sneaky power launching a 3-run double over the center fielder’s head.

Dean Hotz OF / Bell Creek, FL / 2021Uncommitted 2021, athletic frame at 5-11 180. Small leg kick at the plate, keeps his hands back and extended through the ball. Quick runner on the basepaths legging out a 2 RBI triple.

Florida Burn 2021 Horvath
Nolen Ford LHP / Palm Harbor, FL / 2021Uncommitted 2021 LHP has a very athletic body at 6-3 195. His fastball has some good ASR and misses a lot of barrels and sat 73-75. His breaking ball kept batters off balance as it sat 60-62. He has a higher ¾ arm slot with short arm motion that he repeats really well.

Ryan Cleary RHP / 1B / Pinellas Park, FL / 2021Uncommitted RHP with a stocky build. He has a very strong lower half. It helped him repeat his delivery and maintain his release points on every pitch. He pounded the zone with a fastball at 77-78 and gets some good tilt on his slider which sat 69-71.

Florida Burn 2021 Shambora
Skyler Shatto OF / Union, FL / 2021Athletic frame and room for growth at 5-foot-8 and 150 pounds. Good first step on defense and moves well in the outfield. Strong balanced stance at the plate with a short stride and gets good extension while staying through the ball. Strike zone awareness and finds barrel.

Joseph Maccaroni 1B / Palm Harbor, FL / 2021Lanky and athletic frame at 5 foot 10 inches and 160 pounds. Sits 74-76 with his fastball, 65-66 with his curveball with some late depth, 67-68 with his changeup. Stays in line with delivery and repeats it on all pitches and has near fastball arm speed with off speed. Good arm speed and very projectable with room for growth.

Saint Pete Fire 2021
Ryan Willis 1B / 3B / Northeast , FL / 2021Athletic and strong frame at 6 foot 2 inches and 175 pounds. Clean arm action with some carry on the ball. Moves well defensively with average hands and fields everything in the center of his body. Balanced approach at the plate with good extension on the swing to produce pull side power and great barrel awareness.

Florida Burn 2021 Platinum
Tyler Dietz RHP / OF / Calvary Christian, FL / 2021USF commit, Athletic and strong, lean and projectable body at 6-foot-2, 175 pounds and still room for growth. Has a short clean arm action with the ball jumping out of his hand. Stays online with delivery when going home, keeps it easy and smooth which helps him repeat it. Sits 88-90 mph with his fastball with arm side run, 82-83 mph with his slider which is tight with late break. Commands the strike zone with all pitches.

Marcus Brodil OF / Dunedin, FL / 2021Athletic and strong frame at 5-foot-10, 160 pounds with room for growth. Quality first step in the outfield and takes good routes to the ball. Balanced approach at the plate with a short easy stride, helps make his swing repeatable. Strike zone awareness and finds barrels, ball jumps off the bat.

Ryan Kohn 1B / RHP / Spanish RIver High School, FL / 2020Big body frame at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds. Moves well around first base and above average hands. Fluid footwork and stays through the ball when fielding. Balanced approach at the plate with smooth loads and finds barrels. Gets extension and stays through the ball and shows pull side power.

Ryley Jones RHP / Dunedin, FL / 2020Uncommitted 2020, tall strong right-hander, 6-foot-2, 170 pounds, ¾ arm slot, fluid repeatable delivery, falls off to the side on his delivery. Fastball at 76-80 mph with a curveball at 67-70 mph.

Seth Buttice RHP / Dunedin, FL / 2020Uncommitted 2020, lanky outfielder at 6-foot, 155 pounds. Above average defender in right field. Reads the ball well off the bat and tracks balls well. Above average arm. Offensively, a level line drive swing that gets through the zone pretty quickly

Matthew Vargas SS / 2B / Coral Springs Charter, FL / 2020Uncommitted 2020, athletic, projectable frame at 6-foot, 178 pounds. Patient at the plate with quick hands and a level bat. Reached base three times in his first game.

Michael Nelson LHP / American Heritage, FL / 2021Uncommitted 2021, tall, lanky LHP at 6-foot-2, 172 pounds. Over the top funky delivery, fastball sat 70-74. Slow curveball at 56-61 that produced many swings and misses. Threw 2.2 innings allowing one run with seven strikeouts.

Justin Chung SS / 2B / Coral Springs Charter, FL / 2020A stocky 5-foot-11, 150 pounds. Has some present quick twitch athleticism. Offensively, he has a quiet setup and a simple load. Swing is compact and level with present bat speed while staying balanced and using the lower half well. Has some power and hit an opposite field triple. Defensively, he has a quick first step and works with rhythm and confidence at short.

Jackson Brooks OF / LHP / Eustis High School, FL / 2021Uncommitted 2021, athletic left-hander. High ¾ arm slot with easy arm action. Fastball sat 74-76 mph with a curveball at 64-66 mph. Changeup was inconsistent throughout, but overall there is upside.

Hunter Broadway RHP / 1B / Eustis high school , FL / 2021Uncommitted 2021, big, physical frame at 6-foot-1, 225 pounds. Showed gap-to-gap power with natural uphill path and loft. Surprisingly, moved well on the basepaths for a big guy.

Jayson Zmejkoski SS / 2B / North Port High School, FL / 2020Uncommitted 2020, 6-foot-2, 170 pound shortstop who is very physical and displays above average defense at his position. He has a feel for the position and possesses an above average arm. Made a backhand play deep in the hole and completed the long throw with ease.

christopher diemer 1B / OF / lemon bay, FL / 2020Uncommitted 2020, 6-foot-3, 195 pound first baseman has a quality approach at the plate. He doesn’t seem to try to do too much. His level bat path keeps his barrel in the zone for a while. Had a couple of hard base hits against the Florida Grind.

Tyler Hall OF / RHP / Gulf coast high , FL / 2020Uncommitted 2021 outfielder shows athletic actions everywhere on the field. In the box, he attacks the fastball. He attacks early on time and stays on the barrel. His hands are very quick and he hits line drives to all fields.

Kyle Flynn LHP / 1B / Calvary Christian, FL / 2020Uncommitted 2020 LHP has an easy, repeatable high ¾ motion from the left side. He pounded the strike zone with his fastball which sat 78-82 mph. He flashed an impressive 12-6 curveball which sat between 67-70 mph.

Cameron Koch LHP / 1B / Charlotte, FL / 2020Uncommitted 2020 LHP really gets into his lower half on the mound. He generates power from his strong base which helped his fastball sit 72-76 mph with his smaller frame.

Zac Calhoon OF / 3B / Venice, FL / 2020Uncommitted outfielder showed prowess at the plate going 4-4 against V2Pro. His swing has a long hitch in the beginning but once he gets to the hitting position, his hands are quick enough to make up for it. Does a great job at engaging his backside and creating line drives.

Josh Cone LHP / Out-Of-Door, FL / 2022Uncommitted 6-foot 150 pound 2022 LHP has a very clean motion on the mound. He has a very consistent release point on all of his pitches. This consistent release point helps him control all four of his pitches really well. His fastball sat 77-80 and his curveball came in at 69. The changeup occasionally had some depth and was effective against right handed hitters.

Zachary Root 1B / LHP / Ft. Myers , FL / 2022Uncommitted, 6-foot 155 pound 2022 has an impressive bat for his age. With a somewhat slim build, he is able to produce some power with above average bat speed. He barrels ball up on a consistent basis and makes the other pitcher work when he’s in the box.

Roberto Mayorca LHP / 1B / Miami Beach Senior, FL / 2020Uncommitted 2020, Athletic left-hander at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds. Has a high front side with an over the top arm slot. Struggled with command at times due to inconsistencies with his delivery. Fastball sat 81-85 with a 1/7 curveball at 73. Moved athletically on the mound fielding his position multiple times.

Adrian Ojea OF / OF / Park Vista High School , FL / 2020Uncommitted 2020, 6-foot-1, 180 pound outfielder. Short, easy swing from the left side with some power. Quick on the basepaths and in the outfield. Played center field, but projects more as a corner outfielder. Lots of upside.
