2018 Florida Underclass Games: Preview

PBR Florida Staff

This Saturday, PBR Florida is returning to historic Henley Field in Lakeland to host Underclass Games 2018, an invite-only event featuring the state’s top 2020, 2021, and 2022 prospects. The event serves a dual purpose: to provide a platform for the state’s top underclass talents to demonstrate their abilities in both a pro-style workout and in-game environment, as well as an identifier for the esteemed Preseason All-State in January.

And, in addition to determining which players will be invited to attend next year’s Preseason All-State event, Saturday’s Underclass Games will also be an opportunity for players to earn a spot on Team Florida’s roster for the upcoming Future Games – a national event spotlighting the country’s brightest 2020 talents.

Since last year’s Underclass Games event, 33 of 2017’s attendees verbally committed to play at the next level, with 23 of those commitments coming from Division-I schools.

Some of the top uncommitted underclassmen from across the state will be in attendance. Many of the Top 25 Uncommitted players highlighted from the LImed Series will be attending. This includes both of the top 2021 standouts in Renzo and Dorian Gonzalez. Renzo Gonzalez from Alonso high school  is high-waisted with twitchy actions all over the field. On the mound he worked his fastball up to 84 mph with some feel for a bigger breaking 1/7 curveball. Dorian Gonzalez from Belen Jesuit featured a compact, athletic, 5-foot-9, 180-pound frame with some strength throughout. Gonzalez does not get cheated at the plate from the left side. The infielder is balanced at the plate, and showcases advanced strength through the zone while working on an uphill plane.

2020 middle infielder Blake Wright was a treat to watch throughout the Limited Series as he hunted pitches at the top of the Top Tier Roos’ lineup aggressively. His quick hands and strong wrists allow him rip line drives, primarily to the pull side, seemingly each time he was up to bat. Wright’s teammate on the Top Tier Roos Alex Haire will be in attendance as well. Haire, a 2020 outfielder, is still maturing physically at 5-foot-10, 160-pounds, but already exhibits a high-waist on his frame with twitchy actions all over the field including taking advanced routes from his centerfield position.

Luke Baker is another 2020 attending who stood out at the Limited series. The 2020 LHP is long and lean at 6-foot-5, 185-pounds, and showcased a compact, repeatable delivery while flashing feel for three pitches. His fastball worked 82-85 with hardly any effort, and there is likely more velocity to come in the future.

A pair of Gatorball standouts from the LImited series will be in attendance as well in Jonathan Santiago and Corbin Grantham. Santiago has continued to fill out his 5-foot-11, 175-pound frame and now exhibits lean strength throughout his athletic frame. His twitchy athleticism translates well behind the plate where he is a solid defender. Grantham has a physical, 5-foot-10, 177-pound frame with lean, defined muscle throughout, especially in the upper-half. Looks the part in the outfield where his impressive speed allows him to get to all balls while also showcasing a strong throwing arm.

A number of other players are  primed to generate some attention, this includes the 2020 class’ top-ranked second baseman Sal Grinstead. The Spruce Creek infielder has consistently improved his game, both offensively and defensively, and it’s made him a high-follow moving forward. He stands out for his advanced offensive traits, so it’ll be intriguing to see how he’s developed following his sophomore season.

Also participating with Team Florida at the 2018 Future Games, 2021 SS Dominic Scavone will be in attendance and he has garnered some national looks. The TNXL Academy infielder is ranked within the top 20 of his state’s class for his ability to barrel up balls. He’s shown some authentic ability on the mound, too, making his performance at Underclass Games must-see.

With a roster loaded with talented uncommitted prospects, including but not limited to the ones above, this years event is another must see for college coaches across the country.
