OK Top Senior Games: Catchers

The OK Top Senior Games took place at the University of Central Oklahoma on June 1st.  The event featured players from the 2022 class and today we take a look at the catchers who attended.  The top catcher arm strength radar gun readings and pop times belonged to Duncan Key with 77 mph and pop times ranging from 1.92-2.02.  Heath Brown topped the leaderboard with an exit velocity off the tee at 85 mph. Spencer Carollo clocked the fastest 60 time from the group with a laser-timed 7.02 with Duncan Key coming in right behind him at 7.03.  Check out all the info from the catchers and their scouting reports from the event down below.

Jesse Brooks 1B / C / Mount St Mary, OK / 2022

Positional Profile: 1B/C

Body: 6-foot-1, 188-pound muscular frame with a strong lower half.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and athletic posture in the upper body.  Hands set slightly above shoulder height with a mid height back elbow.  Uses a small leg lift stride that gets to good balance and foot gets set early into the process.  Strong upper body rotation with an uphill bat path.  Likes to work the ball up in the air.  Lets the ball travel deep into the zone and gets good extension.  Does a good job of maintaining balance throughout the swing.  

Power: 83 mph exit velocity off the tee and 85 mph exit velocity during BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-76 mph.  C-64 mph.  In the infield utilizes a high ¾ arm slot with short/stiff arm action.  Behind the plate has a very short arm action with the hand tight to the mask.

Defense:  In the infield shows smooth rhythm with the feet working to the ball as well as good footwork around the bag.  Fields the ball out in front of the body with a feel for glove action.  Behind the plate showcased pop times ranging from 2.15-2.25 with quick transfers out of the glove.  Works very quick out of the crouch on throws down to second with weight on top of front foot at release.  Shows a good blocking technique with some flexibility in the hips. 

Run: 7.66 runner in the 60. 


 

 

Heath Brown C / Yukon , OK / 2022

Positional Profile: C

Body: 5-foot-8, 200-pound stocky build with some strength in the lower half.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and athletic posture.  Hands are set at shoulder height and tight to the body.  Flat barrel set slightly tucked behind the head.  Smooth rhythm with short leg lift stride to good balance at contact.  Slight waggle rhythm with the hands and repeats rhythm well throughout the BP session.  Plays the ball out in front of the plate with a slight uphill bat path looking to get the ball up in the air.  Simple and repeatable swing with some strength at contact.

Power: 85 mph exit velocity off the tee and 87 mph exit velocity during BP.

Arm: RH.  C-71 mph.  High ¾ arm slot with arm stretching straight back as the lower body comes of the crouch.

Defense: Showcased pop times ranging from 2.0-2.20.  Feet and shoulders work well together coming out of the crouch position.  Gets ball out of glove quickly with weight working towards the front foot.  Shows strong wrists when receiving with minimal body movement.  Shows good blocking techniques with good body position.

Run: 8.02 runner in the 60.

 

 

Spencer Carollo C / OF / Tuttle, OK / 2022

Positional Profile: C/OF

Body: 5-foot-9, 160-pound lean and athletic frame with room for added strength and size in the future.

Hit: LHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and hands set quietly at shoulder height.  Short stride with the front foot with easy rhythm and a small weight shift into back leg with minimal hand movement.  Flat bat path with line drive and middle of the field approach.  Does a good job of working hands to the inside part of the ball with good extension.  Good overall bat speed and strong rotational acceleration numbers off Blast Motion Sensor.

Power: 79 mph exit velocity off the tee and 90 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  C- 69 mph.  OF-78 mph.  Behind the plate shows a short arm action with high release.  Gets good backspin on the ball out of hand with good carry towards second base.  In the outfield shows a longer arm action with clean arm swing through the path.  

Defense: Behind the plate showed pop times ranging from 2.07-2.13.  Quick transfers out of the glove with throw’s accurate towards second base.  Receives the ball well with minimal head movement and strong wrists.  Solid blocking fundamentals with good hip flexibility.  In the outfield shows smooth rhythm with a shuffle step crow hop technique.  

Run: 7.02 runner in the 60. 

 

Duncan Key C / OF / Deer Creek, OK / 2022

Positional Profile: C/OF

Body: 5-foot-11, 165-pound lean and athletic frame with room for added strength and size in the future. 

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and upright posture.  Hands get set quietly into position slightly above shoulder height with slight barrel tilt towards pitcher.   Short leg lift stride with good balance and good weight shift from backside to plant foot.  Flat bat path with good plane matching ability with utilizing both the lower half and upper body to get on plane.  Shows some strength at contact with good extension with the hands.

Power: 84 mph exit velocity off the tee and 88 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  C-77 mph.  OF-85 mph.  Behind the plate shows a short arm action with high release and quick hand speed.  In the outfield has a high ¾ arm slot with a long release and strong pull down.  Very good hand speed in the outfield. 

Defense:  Behind the plate shows quick transfers out of the glove with pop times ranging from 1.92-2.02.  Release point was a little quick at times but when it comes out clean the ball has good carry.  Shows very solid receiving and blocking skills.  In the outfield shows aggressive routes to the ball with good rhythm between the catch and throw.  Utilizes a short shuffle crow hop style with good finish towards target.

Run: 7.03 runner in the 60.
