PBR OK OSSAA Team Previews: Tuttle Tigers

Scott Hood
OK/MO/KS/ARK Assistant Scouting Director

The Oklahoma high school baseball season kicks off on Feb. 20th for A-B, and March 1st for 2A-6A. Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2023 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, leading into a countdown through the official PBR Oklahoma Preseason Power 25 Rankings.

We’ve submitted a Preseason Questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided as well as our own coverage on players in our team-by-team preseason analysis.

The Tuttle Tigers - ScoreStream

Team: Tuttle Tigers
2022 Record: 36-9
Classification: 4A
Head Coach: Breck Draper
Years at the Helm: 9

OUTLOOK

Coach Draper's Tigers fell just a few pitches short of a State Title in 2022 and return a talented group of players that will look to make a return trip to the back to the 4A Title game.  Tuttle will have a few replacements that played big roles in 2022 to fill such as the loss of Spencer Carollo and Ty Chaddrick but have the type of pieces returning and a flux of newcomers that makes them one of the most talented rosters regardless of class in the state.  The pitching staff is one of the deeper staffs coach Draper has had and they have multiple options on how they want to fill their innings.  To go along with some of the high end stuff, they have a good mix of strike throwers rounding out a well-balanced staff.  Offensively they have firepower up and down the lineup that makes them a tough out 1-9.  With a roster full players that have reached the top end of the 4A slate, look for Tuttle to be a serious force in 4A in 2023 and should be considered one of the front-runners for a State Championship.

IMPACT PLAYERS

Alex Conover, C/3B/RHP, 2023, Cowley County commit

Conover has steadily improved his game year after year on both sides of the ball and now can consider himself one of the top two-way players in the state.  On the mound he pounds the zone with a three pitch mix and shorter arm action that works up into the upper 80's and low 90's.  He has a true starter profile and has logged big innings for Tuttle in the past and should be amongst some of the top aces in the area.  He's always shown strong defensive skills both in the infield and behind the plate where he has a quick release and very strong carry on his throws.  It is in his offensive approach where he has seen the most improvement.  The left-handed hitter added some power to his game last spring and uses a very short and simple mechanical approach that seemingly shows up each time we see him.  Tuttle will rely on Conover to handle multiple aspects in some of the most important positions as well as rely on him to be a main force in the run production in the middle of the lineup.

Braylon Brooks, SS/RHP, 2024, OSU commit

There are few players in the country that play with the type of energy and passion that Brooks brings to the field each time out we see him.  He plays with a unique confidence in his game and it shows up with smooth defensive actions and big arm across the diamond.  He has the type of skills that should allow him to remain in the middle of the diamond in the future and also defends with a high baseball IQ.  At the plate Brooks collects hits in bunches thanks to his line drive approach and willingness to use the entire field.  He has shown the ability to compete in the box with some of the country's best arms and not looked overmatched.  He will also log innings on the mound for Tuttle where he's shown the ability to work the fastball in the upper 80's and low 90's and shows a feel for a sweeping breaking ball.  With his confident game and strong skills, Brooks is the type of sparkplug player at the top of the lineup and on the mound every team would love to have in their dugout.

Ashton Bennight, OF/LHP, 2023, Cowley County commit

Bennight returns to the middle of the lineup as a mainstay for Tuttle throughout his high school career.  The left-handed hitter has excellent plate coverage and has a unique levered swing that can generate sneaky pop at the plate.  He has quick twitch tendencies and strong barrel whip that Tuttle relies on to be a main run contributor in the middle.  Defensively, Bennight has improved his game year over year to where he is an above average defender with strong range and an accurate and consistent arm.  Bennight also will be used on the mound to help bolster the bullpen as well as pick up spot starts when needed.

Carson Moore, 3B/RHP, 2023, Cowley County commit

Moore is another returning contributor to the Tuttle lineup that has shown some power and run-producing qualities in the middle of the lineup.  Moore has had a steady climb in his game throughout his high school career and should be primed for a potential breakout senior campaign.  Moore gives Tuttle some positional versatility where he handles both hot corners as well as shows the ability to fill in in the outfield when needed.  Where his biggest impact can be made is on the mound where he finished the 2022 campaign strong.  He works the fastball in the upper 80's and shows a starter's profile.  Handling the number 2 spot in the rotation again in 2023, look for Moore to log some of the most important innings for Tuttle throughout the Spring and also be counted on for his offensive production.

Brady McAdoo, INF, 2025

McAdoo got valuable experience last year in his freshman year where he was an everyday starter in the middle of the infield.  McAdoo has an advanced offensive approach that plays up at a higher level than most in his class and shows a dynamic athletic profile that translates into his swing.  McAdoo has top of the order type skills with strong barrel control and some sneaky strength at contact.  His athleticism allows him to play anywhere on the field and has shown strong range in the past working in the middle of the diamond.  With Brady's athleticism, his game should only continue to improve as he continues to gain experience and strength in the future.

Hunter Watson, C/RHP, 2026, OU commit

Watson has been lighting up radar guns since his middle school days and in recent looks at him he shows the type of skills that warrant his ranking amongst the top in the 2026 class in the country.  Watson works the fastball in the upper 80's and has reached the low 90's in the past and has a strong feel for pitching even at a younger age.  He shows a feel for the slider and fading changeup which gives him a potential starter's profile and uses his current strength in the lower half to drive off the rubber.  He should continue to increase in velocity as he continues to grow into his frame and has the type of stuff that makes him a must-watch in the future.  He also shows advanced skills behind the plate with a quick release and throws showing strong carry and accuracy to the bag.  The bat will continue to improve with experience and he should get plenty of valuable time on both the mound and behind the plate in 2023.

Grayson Barnes, 1B/RHP, 2024

Barnes continues to show his development both on the mound as well as at the plate as he enters his junior season.  Barnes will be relied upon again to take up starter innings for Tuttle in 2023 where he uses his heavy sinking fastball in the mid 80's and short slider to get off the barrel.  At the plate Barnes shows some serious strength at contact and continues to add power as he gets more comfortable with his swing.  Tuttle will rely on both Barnes' arm in logging big innings as well as his bat in the middle of the order to help provide some thump and run production to the lineup.
