Middle Infield Analysis: Preseason All-State Showcase (Class of 2015)

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

falsoThe Class of 2015 was represented by 11 middle infielders at the Preseason All-State Showcase on February 23. Several quality performances were turned in with SS Nick Falso and 2B Shane Churma separating themselves from the others as elite middle infielders in this class of prospects. Following we will take a look at the Class of 2015 middle infielders in attendance.

  1. Nick Falso, SS/2B, Wissahickon HS

Falso impressed with the top arm of all middle infielders at the event. Falso showed good feet, a clean transfer and throws of 84 mph showed good carry. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound sophomore used a square stance and good hip turn to create an 82 mph bat exit velocity. Falso's hand work well and he stayed inside the baseball during a very solid round of batting practice.

  2. ChurmaShane Churma, 2B/OF, Penn Trafford HS

Churma continued to make a push for a move up the rankings with his performance. The left-handed hitter showcased a fluid swing and an explosive lower half in a round of batting practice that led to baseballs jumping off his barrel. Churma stays on his backside longer than most and really uses his hands well to create an 85 mph bat exit velocity. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound sophomore showed an adequate 76 mph arm for 2B and good hands.

  3. Nathan Ocker, RHP/SS, Middletown HS

Ocker showed potential as a two-way player with athletic actions and throws of 82 mph across the diamond. The 6-foot-1, 160-pound sophomore showcased raw offensive skills with a bat exit velocity of 84 mph. With continued development of his swing mechanics and physical maturation, Ocker could garner interest as a two-way player at the next level.

  4. Billy Gregory, RHP/SS, Wyoming Valley West HS

Gregory is an athletic 5-foot-11, 155-pound prospect who showed good feet and a 78 mph arm across the infield. He displayed a clean exchange and good carry on throws from several arm slots. Gregory hits from an open stance and tends to block his hips from complete rotation in the stride phase of his swing. He barreled the ball consistently and would show additional pop in his bat with some minor adjustments to his lower half.

  5. Ty Reginelli, 2B/SS, Mars Area HS

Reginelli is a 5-foot-8, 145-pound left-handed hitter who has a flat bat path through the hitting zone. He stays on plane regularly allowing him to consistently square the baseball. With a bit more extension through the hitting zone Reginelli would see improvements to his 75 mph bat exit velocity. Defensively Reginelli showcased sound fielding techniques and a 74 mph throwing arm. Reginelli is a definite follow who should show continual improvement as he matures physically.

Best of the Rest:

  • Casey Brown, 2B/RHP, Easton Area HS

Brown showcased a 77 mph bat exit velocity hitting out of a square stance with minimal lower body action. He barreled most pitches and showed the ability to be a consistent line drive hitter. Defensively the 5-foot-10, 135-pound sophomore demonstrated the ability to play through the baseball and made consistently accurate throws of 74 mph across the diamond.

  • Grant Conway, SS, Hempfield HS

Conway showcased athletic actions and a nose for the game. The 5-foot-11, 145-pound sophomore showed good feet and good carry on throws of 76 mph across the infield. Conway showed the ability to routinely barrel the baseball during his round of batting practice and a bat exit velocity of 73 mph. Conway appears ready to make some rapid gains in arm strength and barrel whip as he begins to mature physically.

  • Colton Currey, 2B, Central Dauphin HS

Currey turned in an impressive home-to-first time of 4.16 and a solid bat exit velocity of 81 mph. The 5-foot-8, 155-pound prospect had a solid round of batting practice in which he squared most pitches hitting out of a slightly open stance. Currey will need to continue to develop his 71 mph arm to be on par defensively with his offensive skill set.

  • Cole Kephart, SS, Clearfield Area HS

Kephart is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound prospect who turned in a 4.37 home-to-first time and showcased a 79 mph bat exit velocity at the plate. Kephart has quick hands and some raw power but will have to shorten his swing to barrel the baseball on a more consistent basis. Kephart has a long throwing motion at 77 mph across the infield. With his size and throwing motion, a move to the outfield is likely at the next level.

  • Adam Reed, SS, Central York HS

Reed showed a clean exchange and quick release on throws of 71 mph across the infield. Reed has quick feet as evidenced by his 4.13 home-to-first time. The 6-foot, 150-pound sophomore used a square stance and a short swing path to consistently barrel the baseball to all fields. With added time to mature and additional strength Reed could be a player to follow in this class.

  • Bryson Turner, 2B/RHP, Brandywine Heights HS

Turner is a 5-foot-10, 160-pound prospect who showed a clean exchange and accurate throws across the diamond. He used a slightly open stance and good lower half rotation to create barrel whip in a solid round of batting practice. Turner demonstrated the ability to barrel the baseball consistently and showed signs of some pop in his bat with continued work and additional strength gains.
