Maryland / Virginia Scouting Director

The Vault is a periodic series that takes a look back at some of the top talent across the state that have been part of PBR. In just under two years of existence, PBR Virginia/DC has had over 200 event participants commit to colleges, along with the many more that we have seen through our non-stop, boots-on-the-ground approach to scouting across every state we cover. With The Vault, we give where they are now, along with the scouting report from the event they attended.

110Dawson Sims RHP North Stafford 2017
Virginia Commonwealth Commit
Current VA Rank: No. 36
Current Pos. Rank: No. 18

Event Evaluation (2016/2017 Top Prospect Games 11.8.14)
Sims stands 6-foot-3 and has an athletic frame that he can add weight to. He is a sidearmer with a long, loose arm action that is quick. He is smooth throughout his delivery and lands closed, releasing the ball from behind right handed hitters. Sims’ fastball sat 80-82, touching 83 and had heavy run on it. He did a good job commanding it to both sides of the plate, particularly inside to righthanded hitters. Sims also threw a slider with late, sharp break and full arm speed that came in at 67 and a sinking change-up with fastball arm action that came in at 74.  Offensively, hit from a balance stance with feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Started with high hands, had a quiet rhythm, and had a smooth load back. Took a direct path to the ball, had a good lower half that collapsed on occasion but maintained a line drive stroke. Created backspin with good leverage is going to have the ability to show above-average power.  In the field, showed good actions for size. Had soft hands and average feet, needs to grow into his body. Shows the ability to take good angles, had more range to the glove side.

110Jack Roberts SS/3B St. John's 2017
Elon Commit
Current VA Rank: No. 28
Position Rank: No. 6

Event Evaluation (MD Top Prospect Games 6.30.15)
Athletic frame at 6-foot-1 185-pounds. Hits from a slightly open set up with nice rhythm throughout his swing. Simple load and short stride gets to balanced hitting position.  Short swing path with fast bat speed and some extension. Line drive type hitter with power potential. Fluid actions in the field, with a short and quick arm actions throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Throws were consistent with some carry across the diamond at 80 mph. Soft hands with a clean exchange. Ran a 4.55 home to first and had an exit velocity of 82.  Excellent approach and patience at the plate. Solid foundation in this player.  Project to be more of a third baseman. A 2017 to keep an eye on.

110Gary Fuller RHP Stone Bridge 2017
Army Commit
Current VA Rank: No. 39
Position Rank: No. 20

Event Evaluation (Fall Top Prospect Games 10.31.15)
Fuller has an athletic frame and strong lower half and throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a smooth drop and drive delivery. He has a long, quick arm action that generates velocity with normal effort. His shoulders are uphill and slightly closed as he strides out to a closed landing before falling off as he finishes. Fuller’s fastball has good plane to it and slight cutting action, and ran 81-83 on the day. He threw a sharp, 12/6 curveball with decent armspeed that ran 64-67.

110Hunter Williams LHP Windsor 2017
Radford Commit
Current VA Rank: No. 40
Position Rank: No. 4

Event Evaluation (2017/2018 Fall Top Prospect Games 10.31.15)
Williams is an athletic lefty with a projectable frame who throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a smooth delivery. He has a short arm action and throws with normal effort. His shoulders are level and closed as he strides out on line to a square landing. Gets some lower half involvement and still has more to get from his legs. Williams fastball had slight run and very good downward plane and sat 81-83. His curveball had sharp 1/7 break and decent armspeed, running 62-66. His changeup had good armspeed and ran 69.

110Justin Pearson LHP Mountain View 2017
William & Mary Commit
Current VA Rank: No. 45
Position Rank: No. 5

Event Evaluation (2017/2018 Fall Top Prospect Games 10.31.15)
Pearson has a lanky, athletic frame that is projectable. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a smooth drop and drive delivery. He has a short, loose arm action and a quick arm that generates velocity with normal effort. His shoulders are closed and slightly uphill and he lands a bit closed, creating a crossfire effect and adding deception. Pearson’s fastball had heavy run and sat 78-80. His curveball had late, sharp, 1/7 break to and good armspeed, running 69-71. His changeup was thrown with good armspeed and was 73. Pearson showed good command of all three pitches and demonstrated an advanced feel for pitching.
