VA/MD State Games: 2024 IF Breakdown

In early November, over 140 players from Virginia, DC, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina descended on War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Virginia to take part in the 2021 VA/MD State Games. We continue our detailed breakdown of the event with the 2024 infielders.

 

Drew Barbosa 1B / RHP / Nansemond River , VA / 2024

6-foot, 200-pound solid sturdy frame. Solid confident at the plate, Barbosa had a max exit velocity of 85 mph. (61.2 mph bat speed average). (20.6 mph hand speed average). Starts in a strong open stance with an active controlled load, then uses a leg kick. Bat speed is developing raw, displays a flat upward swing plane and high balanced finish. He created loud contact and found some barrels. Aggressive approach. Solid capable while in the infield, made throws up to 70 mph; had sure hands, consistent footwork, and a clean exchange. Movements laterally were average and he fields the ball out front. Consistent accuracy to the bases, used a longer arm action with a high ¾ slot. Recorded a time of 7.76 in the 60-yard dash.

Jacob Chadwell 1B / RHP / Hickory, VA / 2024

6-foot-2, 168-pound lanky frame. Solid projectable during batting practice, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 88 mph. (70.4 mph bat speed average). (22.0 mph hand speed average). Started in a wide balanced stance with a quick compact load, then used a short small leg kick. Bat speed is present, shows a short upward swing plane and balanced finish. Found some barrels with loud contact. Gap to gap aggressive approach. Solid projectable while in the infield, recorded position velocities up to 72 mph; has a clean exchange, firm hands, and in control feet. Used a high ¾ slot and a longer arm action while showing decent accuracy to the base. Clocked a 60 time of 7.59 at the event.

Hunter Chambers RHP / 3B / Dover (DE), MD / 2024

6-foot, 155-pound long lanky build. Athletic confident during batting practice, Chambers clocked an exit velocity of 84 mph. (66.7 mph bat speed average). (17.5 mph hand speed average). Began in a tall narrow stance with a compact load, then used a short controlled stride. Bat speed is present, displays a simple an inside-out swing plane and balanced good extension on his finish. Found multiple barrels with loud contact. Gap to gap tough out approach. Athletic advanced while in the infield, registered his best throw across the diamond at 80 mph; shows a clean natural exchange, soft consistent hands, and athletic fluid feet. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Using a compact arm action, showed consistent accuracy to the bag from a high ¾ slot. Clocked a time of 7.48 in the 60-yard dash.

Gavin Cunningham 1B / RHP / Albemarle , VA / 2024

6-foot-2, 185-pound proportional strong frame. Confident projectable during batting practice, the right-handed hitter had an exit velocity of 87 mph. (68.2 mph bat speed average). (24.3 mph hand speed average). Started in a balanced athletic stance with a quick compact load, then used a leg kick. Had flashed explosive bat speed, short simple swing plane and balanced finish. Found multiple barrels with loud contact. Pull side gap to gap approach. Projectable while in the infield, made throws at velocities up to 72 mph; showed choppy in control feet, sure firm hands, and a natural exchange. Fielded the ball out front with athletic movement laterally. Showed an-over-the-top slot and a short quick arm action with consistent accuracy to the base. Recorded a time of 7.81 in the 60-yard dash.

Cayden Dudley 2B / SS / Northeastern, NC / 2024

 5-foot-10, 165-pound athletic lean build. Solid projectable in the box, the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 83 mph. (65.0 mph bat speed average). (17.5 mph hand speed average). Began in an athletic active stance with a controlled rhythmic load, then used a leg kick. Bat speed is efficient, shows a short swing plane and good extension on his back foot finish. He barreled up lots of balls with loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Solid projectable while in the infield, made throws up to 71 mph; shows consistent in control feet, soft sure hands, and a natural exchange. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Decent accuracy to the bag, used a short quick arm action and a low ¾ slot. Clocked a time of 7.9 in the 60-yard dash.

Patrick Easton 1B / 3B / Caesar Rodney , DE / 2024

6-foot-3, 180-pound long strong frame. Solid confident during batting practice, Easton's best exit velocity was 91 mph. (64.5 mph bat speed average). (21.8 mph hand speed average). Started in a narrow quiet stance with a quick active load, then used a controlled stride. Has quick efficient bat speed, loose uphill swing plane and high good extension on his finish. He found lots of barrels with loud contact. Aggressive up the middle approach. Solid in the infield, recorded a position velocity of 68 mph; had a natural exchange, consistent fluid footwork, and sure hands. Movements laterally were athletic and he fields the ball out front. Showed a short quick arm action and a high ¾ slot with consistent accuracy to the base. In the 60-yard dash, he clocked a time of 7.49.

Mekha Hicks 2B / 3B / Kempsville, VA / 2024

 5-foot-10, 155-pound projectable solid build. Projectable in the box, Hicks clocked an exit velocity of 82 mph. (61.7 mph bat speed average). (19.0 mph hand speed average). Began in a quiet athletic stance with a controlled rhythmic load, then used a small leg kick. Has efficient bat speed, short an inside-out swing plane and balanced finish. During his round he produced loud contact and found some barrels. Gap to gap approach. Solid confident while in the infield, registered his best throw across the diamond at 68 mph; has sure hands, fluid in control feet, and a quick exchange. Fielded the ball out front with athletic movement laterally. Decent accuracy to the bag, used a ¾ slot with a compact arm action. In the 60-yard dash, recorded a time of 7.46.

Tyler Holton 3B / 1B / DeMatha Catholic, MD / 2024

6-foot, 200-pound sturdy physical build. Projectable at the plate, Holton recorded an exit velocity of 88 mph. (69.9 mph bat speed average). (21.3 mph hand speed average). Started in a balanced pre-loaded stance with a smooth rhythmic load, then used a short stride. Bat speed was present raw, had a short upward swing plane and balanced good extension on his finish. He found lots of barrels with loud contact. Line drive approach. Solid capable in the infield, his best throw was recorded at 78 mph; has a clean exchange, consistent fluid feet, and sure consistent hands. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Showed a short quick arm action and a high ¾ slot with decent accuracy to the bag. Clocked a 60 time of 7.28 at the event.

Nathaniel Jensen 3B / OF / Cape Henry Collegiate, VA / 2024

 6-foot-1, 185-pound proportional strong frame. Fluid projectable in the box, Jensen had a max exit velocity of 91 mph. (65.8 mph bat speed average). (19.3 mph hand speed average). Started in a balanced strong stance with a compact rhythmic load. Has a simple upward swing plane, efficient bat speed and high good extension on his finish. Had a lot of loud contact and found multiple barrels. Aggressive pull side approach. Confident in the infield, his position velocity was registered at 76 mph; had a clean fluid exchange, in control footwork, and consistent hands. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Using a longer quick arm action, showed decent accuracy to the bag from a high ¾ slot. Clocked a 60 time of 7.19 at the event.

Jacob Moore SS / 2B / Cosby, VA / 2024

5-foot-10, 160-pound athletic solid build. Confident at the plate, Moore clocked an exit velocity of 89 mph. (68.9 mph bat speed average). (22.4 mph hand speed average). Began in a tall quiet stance with a rhythmic active load, then used a long stride. Bat speed was raw, displayed a simple upward swing plane and high balanced finish. Created loud contact and found multiple barrels. Aggressive line drive approach. Athletic projectable while in the infield, made throws up to 80 mph; showed sure hands, a clean quick exchange, and fluid quick feet. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Decent accuracy to the bag, used a ¾ slot with a compact arm action. Showed off his speed at the event, running a swift 6.74 60-yard dash.

Sam Morrison SS / 2B / Loyola-Blakefield, MD / 2024

5-foot-8, 135-pound lean build. Capable solid during batting practice, the right-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 79 mph. (60.4 mph bat speed average). (21.8 mph hand speed average). Began in a balanced athletic stance with a compact active load, then used a short stride. Has efficient developing bat speed, short an inside-out swing plane and balanced finish. Found some barrels with loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Smooth projectable while in the infield, recorded position velocities up to 71 mph; shows consistent firm hands, choppy rhythmic feet, and a clean exchange. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Showed decent accuracy to the base with a high ¾ slot and a short arm action. Recorded a 60 time of 7.47 at the event. 

Braxton Pope 1B / RHP / Mechanicsville, VA / 2024

5-foot-11, 180-pound solid sturdy build. Confident projectable during batting practice, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 95 mph. (73.3 mph bat speed average). (21.9 mph hand speed average). Starts in a strong active stance with a compact load, then uses a big leg kick. Bat speed was present explosive, had a short uphill swing plane and high finish. Had loud contact and found multiple barrels. Aggressive approach. Capable confident while in the infield, registered his best throw across the diamond at 79 mph; has a natural exchange, consistent fluid feet, and firm hands. Laterally, movements were quick and fielded the ball out front. Had an-over-the-top slot and a longer quick arm action with decent accuracy to the bag. Clocked a time of 7.47 in the 60-yard dash.

Eli Ranson LHP / 1B / Benedictine, VA / 2024

6-foot, 160-pound lanky proportional frame. Solid projectable during batting practice, the left-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 82 mph. (62.0 mph bat speed average). (21.0 mph hand speed average). Starts in a balanced athletic stance with a quick active load, then uses a short controlled stride. Bat speed was efficient present, had a simple rotational swing plane and high finish. Found some barrels with loud contact. Aggressive up the middle approach. Smooth projectable in the infield, displayed a velocity of 72 mph; shows soft sure hands, smooth consistent feet, and a clean natural exchange. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Consistent accuracy to the bases, used an-over-the-top slot with a compact arm action. In the 60-yard dash, recorded a time of 7.04.

Tanner Schaedel RHP / 3B / Cape Henry Collegiate , VA / 2024

6-foot-1, 159-pound lanky projectable frame. Athletic projectable during batting practice, Schaedel had a max exit velocity of 93 mph. (70.0 mph bat speed average). (22.4 mph hand speed average). Began in a balanced active stance with a smooth rhythmic load, then used a leg kick. Bat speed is flashed explosive, exhibits a short simple swing plane and high good extension on his finish. Found multiple barrels with loud contact. Gap to gap line drive approach. Solid confident in the infield, his best throw was recorded at 78 mph; showed in control athletic feet, a fluid exchange, and sure hands. Fielded the ball out front with athletic movement laterally. Showed a high ¾ slot and a longer arm action. Recorded a 60 time of 7.11 at the event

Daniel Smith RHP / 1B / Granby , VA / 2024

 6-foot-3, 166-pound long lanky frame. Capable projectable during batting practice, Smith's best exit velocity was 83 mph. (61.3 mph bat speed average). (21.6 mph hand speed average). Starts in a balanced athletic stance with a tight load, then uses a big leg kick. Bat speed was developing, showed a level an inside-out swing plane and level good extension on his finish. He found some barrels with loud contact. Up the middle approach. Projectable while in the infield, made throws at velocities up to 70 mph; showed consistent hands, a fluid exchange, and developing feet. Movements laterally were developing and he fields the ball out front. Used a firm arm action with a high ¾ slot while showing decent accuracy to the base. Recorded a 60 time of 8.06 at the event.

Jay Vergel 2B / RHP / Potomac Falls, VA / 2024

5-foot-9, 150-pound lean proportional frame. Solid confident in the box, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 78 mph. (60.2 mph bat speed average). (20.8 mph hand speed average). Started in a tall balanced stance with a controlled load, then used a leg kick. Has quick efficient bat speed, short simple swing plane and good extension on his balanced finish. He barreled up some balls with loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Athletic capable in the infield, displayed a velocity of 79 mph; showed sure consistent hands, a clean exchange, and rhythmic fluid feet. Movements laterally were athletic and he fields the ball out front. Showed consistent accuracy to the base with a ¾ slot and a short quick arm action. During the event, ran the 60-yard dash in 7.09.

Andrew Vinarov 1B / RHP / Hickory, VA / 2024

6-foot-1, 210-pound solid strong frame. Confident projectable in the box, the right-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 85 mph. (63.9 mph bat speed average). (21.5 mph hand speed average).
