2013 Prospect Watch: Griffin Weir (Amherst Steele)

Amherst Steele two-way player Griffin Weir is a month into his junior year and already a target by many regional and national schools.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound right-handed pitcher and infielder is looking for a school with great academics, a coaching staff he enjoys, and strong baseball program. It appears Weir will have ample opportunity to find the school that fits his desires as he has drawn the interest from the likes of the University of Cincinnati, Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, Wake Forest, and Georgia Tech.
An all-Southwestern Conference selection, Weir plays for the T3 Pelicans in the summer and fall. On the mound Weir throws a fastball that routinely sits 86-88, even touching in the low 90’s in his last outing. For his breaking ball, Weir touts a slider (75-77). Changeup (72-74) and a splitter (76-79) are also in his arsenal.
Just as his stuff on the mound plays strong, Weir has the potential to be a difference maker on offense.
“All the colleges I have been in touch with have wanted me to be a two way player, which I couldn't be happier about,” Weir said. “I love hitting and pitching both, I can't pick one over the other!”
Weir, who feels his fastball and an ability to get in on hittter’s hands is his strength, says he wants to focus on controlling each pitch and learning how to approach each batter.
When asked of his most memorable baseball moment to date “playing at Progressive Field this spring and hoping one day the seats will be packed with fans later in life playing for a big league team.” That hope will be fueled as Weir has goals of increase the number of innings he pitches this spring, decrease walks, hit for a higher batting average, and weight.
