PBR Spotlight Game: Maderia outlasts Summit Country Day

By Matt Wallisa

It took extra innings to declare a winner between Division III heavy weights Maderia and Summit Country Day.

Maderia sent junior ace Andrew Benintendi (Arkansas recruit) to the mound while Summit Country Day countered with senior Kenny Kerr.

Neither player disappointed in this hotly contest affair.

Summit scored early as senior Gabe Scott (George Washington recruit) reached based on an error. After a Benintendi balk advanced Scott to second and a force out shifted him to third, the talented senior scored on a ground ball by Kenny Kerry to put Summit Country Day in front 1-0.

Madeira answered back in the bottom of the 2nd with a run of their own. Junior Timmy James drove a Kerry pitch over the left field fence to tie the game up at one a piece.

In the top of the 4th inning, Bradley Fisk countered with a home run of his own to move Summit Country Day ahead 2-1.

However, Madeira fought back.

Junior Timmy James walked to start off the inning. An infield hit by junior Johnny Wood advanced runners to first and second without an out. Sophomore Josh Lowndes singled to load the bases for Maderia. Sophomore Jake Schweppe hit into a double play, but Wood managed to score in the process.

The teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the 9th inning.

Maderia standout Andrew Benintendi lead off with a walk. Summit's Kerr would then hit junior Zach Jansen to make it first and second without an out. Kerr tried to pick off Benintendi, but with good speed, he beat the throw to third making it first and third for Madeira.

That set the stage for junior Daniel Jacobs, who hit a ground ball to third base.

But, the throw from the third baseman pulled the first baseman off the bag allowing Benintendi to score on the play as Maderia walked away with a tough 3-2 victory.
