Underclass Preview Analysis: Class of 2020

The 2017 Underclass Preview brought together 32 prospects from across the state on January 14th at Keystone State Baseball Academy. Today we continue our analysis of all prospects in attendance by reviewing those prospects in the Class of 2020.

JD ArmstrongJD Armstrong, SS/2B, Pine-Richland HS
5-foot-10, 155-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Displayed an above average feel for the barrel while consistently barreling the baseball during a solid round of batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 76 mph. Displayed capable defensive actions with developing 72 mph arm strength across the diamond. Overall game will continue to develop through strength gains and physical maturity.

Drew ButeraDrew Butera, C/OF, Archbishop Carroll HS
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitter starts from an open stance and initiates his swing with a short leg-lift stride. Displayed a feel for the barrel and the ability to create backspin with a bat exit velocity of 80 mph. Quiet receiver with above average arm strength (75 mph from the crouch) flashed pop times of 2.16-2.22 with quick feet and a clean transition. Also showed athletic actions as an outfielder with good carry on throws of 85 mph during his defensive workout. Completed well-rounded outing by running a 7.25 60-yard dash.

Derek FergusonDerek Ferguson, SS/RHP, Central York HS
5-foot-10, 145-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and incorporates a toe-tap stride to create a bat exit velocity of 76 mph. A deep load and inconsistency in getting his front foot down on time leads to being late to the hitting zone at times. Ran a 7.51 60-yard dash and displayed developing defensive skills with 66 mph arm strength across the diamond. The two-way prospect sat 66-68 from a high 3/4 arm slot. Also displayed an improving curveball with 10/4 rotation at 63 mph and a 62 mph changeup thrown with near fastball arm speed.

Trent PierceTrent Pierce, C, Archbishop Carroll HS
5-foot-10, 170-pound has added 15 pounds to his frame in the past six months and showcased improvements across the board in all facets of his game. The right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and incorporates a leg lift stride to initiate his swing. Displayed solid barrel whip (83 mph bat exit velocity) and the ability to create backspin in a solid round of batting practice. Ran a 7.64 60-yard dash and registered pop times of 2.18-2.34 on throws of 69 mph from the crouch.
