Defending Champs West Springfield Blasts McLean

On a cold early season non-conference game, a nine run third inning by visiting West Springfield was the difference in a 12-1, five inning victory over McLean. Junior RHP Teddy Merritt started for McLean and took the loss allowing two hits, three walks, two strikeouts and two runs (1 ER) over two innings. Junior RHP Coleman Grehawick started the game for West Springfield, allowing two hits and one run over two innings, with one strikeout and no walks.

In the third inning, with the score 2-1, and after a pitching change for both teams, led to nine runs for West Springfield. The big blows in the Spartan rally were RBI doubles by senior Justin Nelson, junior Wayne Romero, and Grehawick.

Sophmore RHP Jake Roberti earned the win for West Springfield, pitching two scoreless innings, while not allowing a hit. Senior Tyler Bell closed the 5th inning, retiring all three batters he faced.  

Junior Antonio Graybill and freshman Griffin Stieg collected the only hits for McLean. For West Springfield, lead-off hitter senior Alec Reilly (CNU) went 0-for-0, with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI’s. Justin Nelson was 2-for-3, with 3 RBI’s and senior Jeff Beavers (Hampden-Sydney) was 2-for-3, with an RBI, Both Grehawick and Romero had 2 RBI’s each.
