No. 29 Bloomington 14, Tri-Valley 3 (5 innings)

The Purple Raiders of Bloomington (1-0) opened the 2013 campaign in style with a 14-3 triumph over Tri-Valley, in five innings on Tuesday. The game was played at the beautiful Corn Crib Stadium in Normal, the home of Normal CornBelters of the Frontier League.

Raider sophomore Tyler Workman (1-0) made his varsity debut with four shutout innings, to pick up his first varsity win. Senior Brandon Edwards went deep with the bases juiced to lead the Purple Raider attack. Sophomore Deion Thompson and junior Chris Tomkins each plated a pair of runs and sophomore Charlie Cerny chipped in with two hits and a ribbie.

Mount Vernon 10, Salem 0

Mount Vernon (1-0) 6-foot-2, 210 pound senior 1B Pat Bradford had quite a day in the Rams opener on Tuesday in Mount Vernon. Bradford ignited a four-run Ram first inning with a booming two-run double to give the Rams an early 2-0 lead.

With the Rams up 7-0 in the fourth, Bradford launched a two-run bomb over the left field fence and later in the inning Ram senior Trevor Flota, tripled home the tenth Ram run of the game. Flota had a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate, falling a homer short of hitting for the cycle with two RBI. Senior C Colin Young had a pair of hits including a double and plated two Ram runs.

Ram starting and winning pitcher senior Tyler Ellis (1-0) pitched four shutout innings allowing one hit with six strikeouts. Junior Thomas Weber retired the Wildcats in order in the top of the fifth, to complete the combined shutout.

Carterville 4, Benton 1
The Lions of Carterville (1-0) opened their 2013 season with an impressive 4-1 win over Benton. Lion starting and winning pitcher Sammy Stearns (1-0) fired six shutout innings

allowing three hits and striking out 11. Lion cleanup hitter Patrick Brown led the Lion attack with three hits and a pair of RBI. Steve Wood, Cult Wilkey and Jake McLaughan each had a pair of hits. Blake Hicks chipped in with a double and an RBI.

Benton (0-2) once again was led by sophomore 2B Caleb Kearney, who had a pair of hits and a stolen base. Ranger senior Cameron Rock doubled and junior RHP Nate Higgins fired four scoreless innings in relief for the Rangers.  

Herrin 12, Hardin County 5

Herrin (1-0) erupted for six runs in the top of the first and went on to defeat Hardin Calhoun 12-5 in the season-opener for both clubs. Freshman C Garrett Lane led Hardin County (0-1) with three hits, three runs scored and an RBI to lead the Cougars.

Pope County 6, Massac County 3

Pope County (1-0) defeated Massac County 6-3 in Golconda on Tuesday. Pirate senior RHP Austin Ferrell (1-0) went the distance allowing five hits. All three Massac County (0-1) runs were unearned. Senior Tyler Thompson led the Pirate attack with three hits, including a triple and an RBI. Senior Dalton Ohse chipped in with a two-run single.
