Prospect Identification Showcase: Catching Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report Prospect Identification Showcase took place on Tuesday, June 16th indoors at the MAX in McCook, IL. This event featured all high school aged players.

87 prospects came together to show off their skills in front of the PBR Scouting Staff.

Today we’ll take a look at the top catchers from this year’s Prospect Identification Showcase.

Top Prospects

1. Ben Zordani, C, Lincoln-Way West, 2016
6-foot-3, 190-pound, athletic frame, projectable body, right-handed hitter. Hits from an open stance, loads with high hands, short stride, average balance. Uphill bat path, gap-to-gap approach, 87 mph exit velocity. Defensively showed a quick, clean exchange, short arm action, high ¾ arm slot, pop times ranged from 2.01-2.18, 74 mph from the crouch. Ran a 7.46 60-time.

2. Michael Bieterman, C, Aurora Central Catholic, 2017
6-foot-2, 205-pound, strong build, right-handed hitter. Hits from a wide, closed stance, drops hands on load, long, uphill bat path, pull-side approach, 90 mph exit velocity. Defensively showed good blocking ability, pop times ranged from 2.12-2.22, 76 mph from the crouch. Ran a 7.53 60-time. 

3. Joshua Mosley, C/OF/RHP, Roberto Clemente, 2016
5-foot-11, 205-pound catcher/outfielder with strong lower half. Defensively the right-hander showed short, high ¾, accurate, average strength, average hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange, and plays thru in the outfield. Threw 86 mph from outfield and 76 mph from crouch. Pop times ranged 2.00-2.18. Offensively hits from open and crouch setup, loads back, short stride, average bat speed, and takes short level path. Exit velo 89 mph. Ran 7.31 60. On the mound throws from high ¾, quick arm speed, short arm action, tall balance point, regular effort, and tall-fall type. Showed some rhythm, level shoulders, in line direction, closed landing, and athletic finish. Fastball sat 79-82 mph and changeup was 69-71 mph.

Colin BeDell, C/SS, Bradley Bourbonnais, 2016
5-foot-10, 165-pound, right-handed hitting catcher. Offensively hits from a balanced setup. Hands set back with a short stride. Short level swing path. 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.38. Behind the plate has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Good footwork behind the plate gaining ground to second base on throws, with a slower exchange. Popped 2.11-2.31 and threw 74 mph form the crouch. Also took drills at shortstop and threw 79 mph across the infield.

James Brucker, C/RHP, Willowbrook, 2017
6-foot, 164-pound, right-handed hitting C/RHP. At the plate hits from a narrow open stance. Drop load with a long stride. 80 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.47. Behind the plate has a short arm action and slight pause before release. Jumpy receiver in drills. Accurate throws to second. Popped 2.11-2.29 and threw 73 mph from the crouch. On the mound works from a ¾ arm slot with a long arm action. Drop and drive delivery with an open landing and downhill shoulders. Fastball sat 77-79 topping out at 81 mph. Curveball spins at 66-69 mph. Changeup sat 70-73 mph.

Shaun Falbo, RHP/C, St. Viator, 2016
6-foot-2, 215-pound two-way player. On the mound the right-hander threw from high ¾, long arm action, level shoulders, and square landing. Fastball sat 81-85 mph, curveball was 66-68 mph with 11/5 shape and gradual action, changeup was 67-70 mph. Offensively hits from right side with balanced setup, drops load, short stride, and takes long and uphill path. Exit velo 90 mph. Defensively throws from short, high ¾, some accuracy, fluid footwork, and plays thru. Pop times ranged 2.10-2.22. Ran 7.84 60. Falbo is a player to follow on the mound.

Tom Flisk, C, Andrew, 2017           
5-foot-10, 170-pound, right-handed hitting catcher. Offensively hits from a balanced stance. Short toe turn trigger. Short level swing path with average bat speed. Showed strength thru contact with 83 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.63. Defensively has a long arm action from a ¾ arm slot. Gains ground towards second with slower footwork. Popped 2.26-2.43 and threw 68 mph from the crouch

Kenny Labedz, C, Lincoln-Way East, 2017
6-foot, 155-pound, right-handed hitting catcher. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Stand and throw with online throws. Popped 2.18-2.28 and threw 69 mph from the crouch. Offensively hits from a crouched stance. Drops load with an arm bar and a short stride. Uphill swing path. 80 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.48. 

Storm Simmons, C, Normal Community, 2017     
6-foot, 180-pound, right-handed hitting catcher. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. High set up in catching drills. Popped 2.26-2.43 and threw 68 mph from the crouch. Offensively hits from a balanced setup. Loads down to up with a short stride. Average bat speed with an uphill swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 83 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.19.

Ike Speiser, C, Bradley Bourbonnais, 2016                      
6-foot-1, 160-pound, right-handed hitting catcher. Defensively has a short arm action from a side arm slot. Gaines ground towards second. Strong arm with a slight pause before release. Popped 2.15-2.19 and threw 76 mph from the crouch. Offensively hits from a balanced slightly open stance. Opposite field hitter with a long uphill swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 88 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.49.

Nate Stiegal, C, Marist, 2017
5-foot-10, 165-pound catcher. Offensively hits from right side, balanced, closed, and crouch setup, loads back, short stride, and uphill path. Exit velo 78 mph. Defensively throws from short, over-the-top, shows some accuracy and clean exchange. Pop times ranged 2.22-2.42 and velo from crouch was 69 mph. Ran 7.53 60.

Gabriel Wair, C, Plainfield South, 2016
5-foot-8, 185-pound, left-handed hitting catcher. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Strong arm with accurate throws. Popped 2.08 -2.16 and threw 79 mph from the crouch. At the plate hits from a crouched open stance with a short stride. Short, uphill swing path. 75 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.64.
