The Preseason All-State was hosted by Virginia Sport Complex on Saturday, February 17th. Over 100 players from around the Commonwealth came to be apart of the biggest event in Virginia history and the talent on display was equally impressive. We continue our analysis of the event with the infielders.

Hunter Gilliam 3B / 2B / Fuqua, VA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 27 / POS: 4 Gilliam is a 6-2 Longwood commit with an athletic frame, he hits from the right side from an open athletic stance, short leg kick stride on line, smooth load back, good rhythm to his swing. Hips explode violently and he maintains balance during his swing. Short swing, fast whippy bat, strong through contact, level line drive swing that generates power to all fields. Exit velocity was 100. On the infield, quick clean feet, works around ball well and fields with a wide base and soft hands. Pushes through the ball to a quick clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short free arm action, infield velocity was 85. Ran a 4.10 home to first.

 

Tanner Schobel SS / C / Walsingham Academy, VA / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 7 / POS: 4 OverallRank: 291 / POS: 71 Schobel is a 5-10 Virginia Tech commit with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it, he hits from the right side from an open athletic stance. Strides on line, loads back with a wrap, has rhythm to his swing. Explosive lower half and keeps some balance. Short and quick to ball, works slightly uphill with a whippy bat, very strong at contact with good extension. Showed good approach working middle of the field and barrel awareness, has doubles power with potential to continue to develop more, exit velocity was 91. On the infield, clean feet, rounds the baseball and fields with soft hands and a wider base. Works through the ball, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a longer arm action and some effort, infield velocity was 85. Ran a 4.28 home to first.

 

Carter Trice SS / 2B / Lee Davis, VA / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 21 / POS: 9 Trice is 6-0 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it, he hits from the right side from an upright relaxed balanced stance. Short leg kick stride on line, smooth load back, good rhythm to swing, explosive hips with good balance to swing. Very short quick stroke, gets to contact quickly with some extension through the ball. Level line drive swing produces gap power with potential for more, showed good approach working gap to gap, exit velocity was 92. In the infield, clean feet, rounds the ball and fields with a wider base and above average hands. Clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot, shorter arm action strong arm with easier effort, infield velocity was 90. Home to first was 4.32.

 

Zach Stanko 3B / SS / Walsingham Academy, VA / 2019 Rankings  StateRank: 41 / POS: 4 Stanko is a 6-2 Longwood commit with an athletic frame that still has projection to it, he hits from the right side from an open athletic stance. Big leg kick stride on line, loads up and then back, has some rhythm. Quick whippy bat, very strong through contact with extension through the ball. Works uphill with a fly ball approach, power is evident with home run power to pull side and doubles power to all fields, exit velocity was 96. In the infield, quick clean feet, aggressively rounds the ball and fields with a wide base and above average hands. Jacob Mustain 1B / OF / Hickory, VA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 113 / POS: 5 Mustain is 6-1 VMI commit with a stronger athletic frame, he hits from the left side from a slightly open athletic stance. Short stride in place, short quick load back, some rhythm to his swing. Hips have some explosion and he maintains good balance during his swing. Short to ball with a quick whippy bat, works uphill through contact with good extension. Swing sets up for power to his pull side, but showed good approach working gap to gap during his round, doubles power to all fields with home run power to pull side, exit velocity was 90, consistently found the barrel. At first, gets body behind the ball and fields with a wider base and average hands. Throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot with some looseness to his arm action, infield velocity was 82. Got up the line quickly, home to first was 4.18.

 

Zachary Wojnarowski SS / RHP / Grafton, VA / 2019 Wojnarowksi is 5-11 and has an athletic frame that still has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open athletic stance. Strides on line, short smooth load back, good quiet rhythm to his setup. Hips are explosive and he maintains balance during his swing. Short to ball, gets barrel to contact quickly, strong through contact with good extension through the ball. Level to contact and uphill through the ball, showed good approach working middle of the field, easy doubles power to all fields with potential for more, exit velocity was 93. On the infield, quick clean feet, rounds the ball and fields it with a wide base and above average hands. Tredell Blow SS / OF / Home School, VA / 2019 Rankings  StateRank: 15 / POS: 3 Blow is 6-2 with a lanky frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open upright stance. Big leg kick stride, smooth load down, good rhythm to swing, explosive lower half and good balance to swing as well. Path is short and barrel gets to ball very quickly, uphill path with a pull preference. Good extension through the ball, power is evident with potential for more, exit velocity was 90. In the infield, actions are raw but athletic, quick feet, fields with wider base and above average hands. Throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, short loose arm action, infield velocity was 84. Christian Martin SS / 2B / Amherst Co., VA / 2021 Martin is 5-10 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it, he hits from the left side from an open athletic stance.
