Prep Baseball Report

Senior Spotlight: RHP Sam Cherry

Phil Kerber
Georgia Scouting Director

Our goal at Prep Baseball Report is to promote high school players, and give them the exposure they need to be able to play at the next level. With the 2020 high school season in limbo, we want to continue to be able to promote players, even when baseball is not being played. Starting today, we will be spotlighting several uncommitted prospects to help them get the exposure they need to play at the next level.

With the season being cut short, there were seniors around the state who did not get a fair chance to be seen, one of those was RHP Sam Cherry (Hillgrove, 2020). Cherry was an influential member of the Hawks pitching staff, making six appearances and three starts on the bump. He compiled a 2-1 record and two saves over 17.2 innings pitched. The right-hander allowed 11 hits over this span while striking out 12 and walking only four batters, good for a 2.38 ERA and a robust 0.85 WHIP.  At 5-foot-10, 160-pound, Cherry is athletically built and has plenty of room to continue developing, given that he is young for a 2020 (will not turn 18 until August). Cherry is highly competitive on the mound and commands three pitches. Although he will not blow anyone by with power stuff, working 81-83 mph with his fastball, all his pitches play with heavy movement that induce swing and misses and weak contact. The fastball has run and sink to it, especially to the armside, coupled with a sweeping slider and a changeup that he pulls the string on.
