Team Illinois Game 3 Recap

By Drew Locascio
Illinois Scouting Director

Illinois and Indiana locked up in one of the highest scoring affairs of the entire 2019 PBR Future Games. Indiana prevailed in the end, winning 14-12 in the final game of the event, for both teams.

As one would expect in a high-scoring affair most of the highlights came on the offensive side of the ball. The biggest blow of the game came from 2021 catcher Ty Batusich. The Joliet West HS product jumped all over a fastball and delivered a no-doubt, three-run home run to deep right-center field. The big blast tied the game at seven in the bottom of the fourth inning. Batusich also singled through the right-side to finish the day 2-for-2.

Another offensive standout was INF Jack Scheri (LaSalle Peru, 2022). In Scheri’s first at-bat of the day he lined an RBI single to left and later came around to score. He later reached on an error in the fourth, running a 4.36 down-the-line. He saved his best swing of the day for last, this one a deep two-run triple to left-center field. Scheri stood out all week thanks to his high-motor, consistent competitive at-bats and his above-average speed. He is a 2022 athlete to follow moving forward.

Another high-level athlete who finished the Future Games on a high note was OF/LHP Isaiah Thompson (Sacred Heart-Griffin, 2021). Thompson, had multiple hits in the first two games, impressed on the mound and lined an RBI single to right-field in the fourth inning today. Fellow Sacred Heart-Griffin product, INF Sam Antonacci, continued to find barrels on Sunday. The left-handed hitter finished 2-for-3 with an RBI single to right and scored two runs.

The final highlights on offense came from a pair of right-handed bats, 3B Andrew Jimenez (St. Charles North, 2021) and C/INF Ben Hartl (Springfield, 2021). Jimenez laced a triple to the right-center field gap and Hartl went 2-for-3 with two singles to left field, an RBI and two runs scored.

RHP Brennyn Cutts (Toledo-Cumberland, 2021) started on the mound and continued to prove he is one of the top uncommitted arms in Illinois’. Cutts ran his fastball up to 89 mph, struck out one and showed the potential for an above-average breaking ball. Cutts, has a physical 6-foot-3, 210-pound, frame, quick arm and more velocity to come.
