2019 OHSAA Tournament: State Final Four Preview - Division III

We are holding a fan vote via twitter that will end Thursday night and we will add those results below after the vote is completed.

State Final Four Overview: Two of the top Division III programs in the state could be on a collision course to the state finals with Coldwater and Canton Central Catholic on a roll after six-loss regular seasons. The Cavs outlasted their toughest foe in Archbold in the regional finals, coming from behind in the 7th before eventually winning the game int he 8th, while CCC scored an impressive victory over the 2018 state champion South Range in the district title game. But don't overlook Roger Bacon and Ridgewood, which have thrived in the underdog role after losing 10 and nine games, respectively in the regular season.

Coach's Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won regionals?
Coach: Winning the Regionals was a great comeback in scoring 4 runs in the 7th and 1 in the 8th to defeat a great team in Archbold. Our players and program has been in tough games many times, but just a great show of resiliency by our team.

PBR: Talk about what this means for your school and community?
Coach: The game with Archbold was a game played by two similar schools and communities. We know we brought the best out in them and they brought the best out of us. It is a shame one of us had to lose.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team field at the state?
Coach: The state final 4 as always will be tough and the best team will need to play great baseball and will need some luck to win it all.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: It is a great feeling to be back to the state after losing a heartbreaker in the 2018 finals. It shows how all our hard work and great attitudes has paid off to get us to our 21 state final 4 in school history.

Coach's Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won regionals?
Coach: Most incredible moment of my coaching career. It still really hasn’t even fully set in yet. We set a goal at the beginning of the school year, in the fall, that we were going to be playing on the biggest stage possible. We are here now. Our guys were working their tails off in the weight room, winter workouts, late night practices, etc. It is truly a team effort and a major milestone for the Roger Bacon Baseball Program.

PBR: Talk about what this means for your school and community?
Coach: The RB community is fantastic. We have received an outrageous amount of support. I loved looking up into the stands at the Regional Championships game and seeing familiar faces that I haven’t seen in many years. The social media following and out-pour of support from school Administration to our player’s parents and their classmates has been so incredible. This is the first state tournament bid in over 50 years in baseball at RB. What a great moment for the school and this program!

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team field at the state?
Coach: One game at a time. We are not satisfied with just getting here. I told my guys that this isn’t a vacation, this is a business trip. Coldwater has an excellent tradition and state tournament experience that you can’t teach. It is going to be the biggest challenge of the year for our team. I am excited they get that opportunity to show what we are really about. We don’t get much attention for some reason and we have been building this over the last 10 years. I have been telling people that we were dangerous for quite some time. I’m excited to show the state of Ohio what we are all about.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: We have great senior leadership this season. We only have 3 seniors and it couldn’t be more perfect that it is these three guys. They are the heart and soul of this team. They control the tempo at practice. They show up everyday wanting to do nothing, but win. I am so happy for them that they get to experience this moment. Jake Speed, Dylan Polk, and Chris McDaniel are a special group of seniors that will be remembered for a long time at RB.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won regionals?
Coach: It was a great feeling to see our kids celebrate a great accomplishment and the first Regional Baseball Championship in school history. They are a tight-knit group who is not worried about who gets the credit or recognition, but instead are there for one another. They’ve worked extremely hard from day 1 back in February to get to that point and to see it pay off for them is rewarding.

PBR: Talk about what this means for your school and community?
Coach: We are very fortunate to have the school and community support that we do, not only for baseball, but for all of our programs at Ridgewood. From the Administration and the staff in our entire district to everyone who comes to our games, listens on the radio, or reads about it in the paper, the entire community of West Lafayette deserves it.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team field at the state?
Coach: Four great programs all vying for the same goal, it should be an exciting time.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won regionals?
Coach: It was overwhelmed with emotion for the kids. Most of this team have been together for the past 3 seasons. They have had some tough luck in recent post-season years and I was just excited to see them succeed.

PBR: Talk about what this means for your school and community?
Coach: It means a great deal to our school and Stark County. This county and school have a long, rich and storied tradition in baseball and you want to provide them with a class program on the field and we at Central Catholic are proud to represent this county.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team field at the state?
Coach: To be honest, I don't know much about the team we are playing and I have no clue who is even on the other side. We can't get to Day 2 without taking care of Day 1. Obviously, if you are down to 4 teams than you are doing something right and you must be pretty freaking good. Should be a lot of fun.
